Anniversaries and a new year in craft beer: beer events for the week of December 26

Hard to believe, but just five years ago, the Burnside Brewing crew was helping the Metalcraft Fabrication guys install the new brewhouse, which comprised Metalcraft's first commercial tanks. They've both come a long way since then and each is an integral part of Portland's craft beer scene. They're celebrating Burnside's fifth anniversary at the brewery (701 E. Burnside St,) starting at 3 p.m. Saturday Dec. 26, by roasting a pig and serving it five ways to pair with five variations – one from each brewer – of a golden rye ale brewed specially for the party. Get there early and you get a free commemorative glass while 250 last... FoystonFoto

A Holiday Gift From John Harris
Phobos Single Hop Red Ale
is available now in bottles and at the Ecliptic Brewing, 825 N. Cook St. Hopped entirely with citrusy, tropical Azacca hops, Phobos is named after the Martian moon that circles the Red Planet (I’ve always thought that the Martian moons are the coolest in a spooky, sci -fi way, being named Phobos – fear – and Deimos – darkness, but that’s just me…) Eight types of malts were used to give this beer a deep caramel flavor and rich red color that would make Old Man Mars proud. Phobos finishes creamy and smooth and ahs 34 IBU and 5.6 percent abv.
