Press Release:

Beer builds community and Michael Kora has been laying a strong, local foundation for loyal beer lovers in the Montavilla neighborhood of SE Portland. Montavilla Brew Works celebrates its first year in business this coming weekend, July 15th, 16th and 17th. This small neighborhood brewery’s tap list has been prolific from its inception, with over 12 house-made beers available on tap within the first 3 months of their Grand Opening. With an array of stalwart beer styles like Red Krush Red Ale, Stick and Frame Blonde Ale, Lesh is More! Pale Ale and Flam Tap IPA, Kora’s brewing style has also boasted excellent lager styles like Korabraü Helles, a Traditional Bock and a plethora of dry, flavorful and very hoppy “session-style” IPA’s as well. Experimentation is also alive and well with Montavilla as local patrons are often greeted by a 5 gallon carboy fermenting away on the back bar; part of MBW’s “Very Limited Series” releases.

After two long years of on-site planning, design, fabrication, city permit headaches and an extensive remodel of a 1922 auto garage, Montavilla has welcomed this beautiful craft brewery with open arms. Outfitted with a spacious yet intimately furnished taproom and hand-crafted Western Maple wood bar, patrons have an unobstructed view of the shiny new steam-fired brewhouse. The outdoor patio has also come into its own with over a dozen picnic tables, cornhole and beautiful planters to accent the surroundings. Beer lovers are encouraged to bring in any food they wish, and often do from Flying Pie Pizza right across the street. Part of Kora’s philosophy before he wrote a business plan included only three rules: No hard liquor, No smoking and No TV’s. Beer, good conversation and feeling comfortable are the priorities and focus of the establishment….and its working.

The endearing support from the neighborhood has been overwhelming while the business continues to grow in a very organic, grassroots fashion. Word of mouth and strong local media support have been Kora’s best allies in terms of promotion while the excellent quality of beers from MBW’s 10 barrel brewhouse continue to impress local beer aficionados and locals alike.
