Portland Brewing and Double Mountain Collaborate on Subcontinental IPA for PDX Beer Week

In time for PDX Beer Week, Portland Brewing has collaborated with Double Mountain Brewery on this year’s beer week beer, Subcontinental IPA. This collaboration beer will make its debut on Thursday, June 9th at the PDX Beer Week kick-off parties in two of Portland’s industrial areas. One party will be at Portland Brewing in our city’s Northwest Industrial area and the other at a warehouse space at 100 SE Alder St in Portland’s Southeast Industrial area.

For this year’s PDX Beer Week official beer organizers went instate bringing together one of Portland’s oldest breweries, Portland Brewing and Hood River’s popular Double Mountain Brewery. The resulting coloration of an IPA was a no-brainer for both Ryan Pappe, Head Brewer at Portland Brewing, and Matt Swihart, owner and brewmaster at Double Mountain Brewery. Both brewers have an appreciation of spicy Indian food that resulted in the use of Indian garam masala spice. “Inspired by the intriguing spice blends used in Indian cuisines, we carefully added our own blend of spices to help draw out the tropical notes from the El Dorado, Calypso, Centennial and Challenger hops,” wrote Pappe in a news release. “I believe the spice blend we ultimately chose creates an impression that is greater than the sum of its parts,” added Swihart. Subcontinental IPA sits at 7% ABV and 50 IBUs.

For this year’s packaging of the beer week’s 22 oz. bottle, Portland Brewing reached out to local Portland based comic book artist, Michael Avon Oeming to create the label for Subcontinental IPA. “Beer labels have become their own art form lately, embracing graphic arts to give each brew its own identity,” noted Oeming.

The folks behind Portland Beer Week recruited local culinary experts to amp up the festivities. BUNK Sandwiches, Salt & Straw, HOTLIPS Pizza and Blue Star Donuts are all creating limited-edition specialties incorporating Subcontinental IPA in the dishes. These food items will be available at their respective locations with the exception of Salt & Straw’s beer-infused ice cream that will found exclusively at the Wiz Bang Bar in the recently opened Pine Street Market in downtown Portland.
