Breakside Brewery and Salt & Straw Sponsor Beer Float Fundraiser

This Sunday, April 1, 2012 Breakside Brewery and local ice cream maker Salt & Straw will be sharing the last of their collaboration projects in a charity event at Breakside’s NE Portland Pub. The ‘ice cream beer social’ will feature beer floats made with Breakside’s Salted Caramel Sweet Stout and Salt & Straw’s Bailey’s with Irish Stout ice cream. The two foodstuffs are both collaborations between Breakside brewmaster Ben Edmunds and Salt & Straw churnmaster Tyler Malek. Malek based the recipe for the ice cream on Breakside’s award winning Dry Stout and used the same malted and roasted barleys that the brewery uses in the beer. For the sweet stout, Edmunds blended a traditional export stout with a salted caramel syrup based on Salt & Straw’s sea salt with caramel ribbon ice cream. Read More…

Northwest Cider Association Cidermaker’s Dinner @ Clarklewis

PORTLAND, March 6, 2012—Craft cider, made with traditional methods and heirloom apple varieties, is a deliciously historic beverage that’s making a remarkable comeback in the Pacific Northwest. Created just over a year ago, the Northwest Cider Association currently boasts 17 member cideries spread across the region. Portland’s first annual Cidermaker’s Dinner offers PDX residents a remarkable opportunity to taste many of their beverages, while learning about the cider process from orchard to glass.

The first hour of the event will feature a casual passing of appetizers to be enjoyed with two ciders from member cideries. Many cidermakers will be on hand to answer questions and share information about their orchards and forthcoming ciders. Then, guests will sit down to a four-course meal prepared by Chef Dolan Lane, with each course paired with two different Northwest artisanal ciders and featuring cider as a component of the dish.

The dinner is scheduled for April 4, 2012, from 6pm-10pm, at Clarklewis (1001 SE Water Avenue, Portland). Cost for the evening, including all pairings, tax and gratuity is $80 for members of the Northwest Cider Association and $85 for non-members. Tickets are available at  www.nwcider.com and in person at Clarklewis.

Since 2003, Clarklewis has been the standard-bearer for the farm-to-table food movement in Portland. The philosophy has been rigorously maintained by Bruce Carey and Chef Dolan Lane since they took over operation in 2007. They create delicious hand-crafted Northwest cuisine with Italian and French influences, and proudly support local, organic farms.  www.Clarklewispdx.com

Breakside Brewery 4 Course/5 Beer Brewer’s Dinner @ The Bent Brick

Breakside BreweryMonday night March 19, Breakside Brewery will be having a four course/five beer brewer’s dinner at The Bent Brick. Space is limited to twenty, and tickets are $45, so expect these to go fast.  Adam Robinson and Scott Dolich bought an entire barrel of single batch bourbon from Buffalo Trace distillery. In addition to getting their own “Bent Brick select” bonded whiskey, they also got to keep the barrel that the bourbon was in. They asked to collaborate on a beer to be used in barrel aging, and Breakside brewer Ben Edmunds says “We settled on a Bourbon-Barrel Aged Tripel using the yeast from this year’s Cheers to Belgian Beers Festival. We’ve had the unoaked version of the tripel on at the pub for the last few weeks, and the beer that we are debuting at the dinner will be the 100% barrel-aged version. A blended version will be on tap and in bottles at the end of the month, and it may end up being our entry for this year’s festival. Again, scroll down for the full menu, including beer pairings.” Reservations can be made by contacting The Bent Brick directly at 503.688.1655.

MENU: BENT BRICK/BREAKSIDE BEER DINNER MONDAY, MARCH 19, 2012
Mussels on the half shell with Tabasco mignonette // Dry Stout

Squid, fennel, chickpeas and green corriander // French Fennel Farmhouse and Bent Brick Tripel

Pork, scrapple, sweet potato, red eye gravy // Bent Brick Bourbon Barrel Tripel (100% Barrel Aged)

10 Barrel Tasting Menu

Oregon Brown

This is an event highlight. This is a brand new beer. It will only be available on draft at the tasting, and By the Bottle is the only place in Washington that’s pouring it.
A traditional American Brown, thrown through the ringer with a unique recipe twist.  A standard brown malt bill is augmented with Aromatic, Marris Otter, Cara-Crystal wheat, flaked barley, chocolate, and special roasted malt. Then it’s overloaded with Cascade, Centennial, Northern Brewer, Simcoe, and Chinook hops, leading to a complex battle of pine and citrus flavor and aromatics.

ABV 6.7%   IBU’s 68

ISA (India Session Ale)

*Available in 22oz bottles*

10 Barrel Brewing CoDeep gold with orange highlights, big citrusy aroma full of grapefruit and tangerine due to massive dry hopping, clean, crisp maltiness with a hint of sweetness, balanced bitterness is the result of the loaded late-kettle hop addition.

Malts: 2-row Pale, Honey malt, Wheat
Hops: Summit, Cascade, Centennial

ABV: 5.5   IBU’s:  51

S1NIST0R Black Ale

*Available in 22oz bottles*

*Gold Medal, 2011 World Beer Championships*

*Bronze Medal, 2009 Great American Beer Festival*

S1NIST0R Black Ale uses a special German dehusked black malt free of astringency, giving the beer a rich black color without the traditional dark beer characteristics. You will notice subtle hints of chocolate with an easy drinking balance on the back end.  In the glass the dark color may look intimidating to some, but don’t be fooled.  The unique combination of malts creates a very light body and smooth finish.

Malts: 2-row Pale, Carafa, Biscuit
Hops: Perle

ABV: 5.4%    IBU’s:  28

Apocalypse IPA
*Available in 22oz bottles*
*Silver Medal, 2011 World Beer Championships*

A Northwest American-Style IPA.  The color comes through as a deep gold with orange hues.  Fruity and citrusy hop aroma shines, with hints of pine resin.  The four hop flavor dominates, re-enforcing the aroma with more citrus, fruity and piney notes.  The malt character is clean and smooth with a unique toasted flavor from the Victory malt. A firm bitterness keeps it all together.  Apocalypse has a medium-bodied mouth feel, finishing crisp and dry, a very drinkable IPA.

Malts: 2-row Pale, Victory, Crystal
Hops: Horizon, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade
ABV: 6.5%    IBU’s:  65
