Sustainability In The Brewing Industry: All About the Water

Full Sail View (photo courtesy of http://www.fullsailbrewing.com/)

By Jen Sotolongo

Beer production requires a lot of water. In fact, 90% of beer is water. And this figure doesn’t even include the water required for cleaning, running a brewery or brewpub, or growing hops and barley.

According to the Water Footprint Network, the Netherlands organization that pioneered measuring water footprints, one gallon of beer requires 689 gallons of water to produce. The majority of water used in the production comes from growing and fermenting barley and other grains used during the brewing process. The industry average is 6-10 gallons of water per gallon of beer produced in the brewery, according to Executive Brewmaster at Full Sail, Jamie Emmerson.

Of the top 100 water users in Portland during the FY09-FY10 year, Widmer Brothers ranked #27 and Pyramid Brewing #77. A recent study conducted by consulting firm McKinstry & Co. and the World Bank estimates that by 2030, more than one third of the world’s population will face major water shortages if we continue business as usual. This is a cause for concern in an industry whose product relies heavily on water, especially in states like Colorado and California, with abundant breweries, and severely depleted rivers.

Luckily, many breweries realize the importance of Read More…

As published yesterday here on Brewpublic, today is when Widmer has their first two of four new 1,750-bbl fermentation tanks installed. That is a lot of beer and the largest tanks in the Pacific Northwest.

Sam, Ben and Joey under umbrellas waiting for the show to begin. Having found out over the weekend that the installation would begin around 8:00 a.m. this morning I arrive around 8:30 a.m. to be greeted by a nice Portland mist. I set up shop under a Read More…

Portland, you will be missed

Angelo working hard (Photo By Aaron Potter of OneBloomPhotography)

By Angelo M. De Ieso II

Over the past 14 years I have met so many wonderful people in and around Portland. These people have shaped my life in ways that I can’t even begin to explain. Many of these fabulous folks I have met through being a beer blogger and an advocate of craft brew. The talented souls who work in a myriad of capacities to grow the artisan beer segment of our top notch community here in the Pacific Northwest have served not only as tastemakers, but they’ve helped me to evolve and redefine much of who I am and what I see in the everchanging world around me.

I remember when my friend Read More…

Widmer to add 4 new tanks, largest in Pacific Northwest

Widmer Bros. brewer Doug Rehberg with the brewery's new fermenters

On Monday May 21, 2012, Widmer Brothers will be installing two 1,750-bbl fermentation tanks to their brewhouse off North Interstate Avenue in Portland, Oregon. According to a press release sent earlier, these two tanks are the first of four 60-foot tall tanks, the largest yet in the Pacific Northwest. Built by Paul Mueller Company in Springfield, Missouri, these tanks will be the largest in the Pacific Northwest, and according to the brewery, because of their size, the tanks will travel via truck on a specially organized route. The installation has been scheduled to take place early to minimize the impact on traffic; however Mississippi Avenue will be closed from North Russell Street to Interstate Avenue to accommodate the tanks and equipment. This will be done in the early morning to minimize disruption of commuter traffic in the area. The tanks will be brought in to the already existing brewhouse after the paneled ceiling is removed and “the largest crane on the West Coast” is employed to lower them in. Read More…
