Pix Patisserie: For Kids of All Ages

After a nice lunch at New Old Lompoc’s Hedge House with my friends Aaron and Monica and their two little kids, we were meandering on our way when two ladies holding ice cream cones struck our attention. What kid doesn’t love ice cream? The kids’ eyes lit up, and Monica asked the ladies where they got their summertime treats. One of the women pointed to Pix Patisserie, a quaint little shop with luring sweet treats beckoning from the window. I knew Pix well. They hosted interesting events including music where many of my musician friends have played. Even better, they were known for good beer. Lots of delectable Belgian beers, including Benedictine Monk-brewed Trappist beers. At this juncture, none of us could help but enter the establishment that conjured our sweet tooth. The adult, like the kids, were in a candy store…literally.

This particular candy store was a haven of decadent French flavors including almond cakes studded with raspberries and pistachios, rich and creamy caramel mousse, salted almonds, dense chocolate almond cake, and apple almond nougatine just to name a few. For Monica and the kids, a few cones of chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla ice cream. For the adults, beer candy. Aaron opted for the chocolate beer float–fresh Rogue Chocolate Stout brewed with a general amount of robust cacao served over a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. I, on the other hand, could not resist a bottle of Maredsous Abbey Dubbel Ale on it’s own. The deep chestnut body revealed a complexity of nutty, sweet, dry, cherry notes that evolved with each sip. Entrenched in our own treats, each of us sat in the shaded seating out front enjoying the nice weather and losing ourselves Pix’s flavorful delights. Mmmm.
