Brewers’ Collective w/ Upright’s Alex Ganum @ Portland U-Brew

Something we’re trUpright's Alex Ganum address the media regarding two of his fruit beers to be present at the Portland Fruit Beer Fest at Burnside Brewingying to start here at Portland U-Brew is a “Brewers Collective.” We’re hoping for a different vibe than the traditional homebrew club. Judging others, and their beer will not be our main objective. We’re looking to build a community of like minded brewers passionate about their craft, that are willing to help others learn, and learn from others. We want professional brewers, homebrewers, and those interested in brewing to be able to get together, and learn from one another while doing what we love to do: BREW BEER! The idea is to get together once a month, and brew a beer together here at P.U.B. with our collective knowledge. The beer will then be tapped at the next months meeting. It’s free to attend, and its definitely lots of fun. Please e-mail Aaron Gillham at pdxubrew@gmail.com with any questions you have. Cheers!

There is no rest for the weary in the craft beer world these days! After a busy and successful Oregon Craft Beer Month, Breakside Brewery (820 NE Dekum, Portland, Oregon) is taking on August with even greater gusto and will be releasing ten new brews over the course of the next four weeks.

Another Oregon Craft Beer Month in the Books

Full Sail Brewmaster John Harris in the Oregon Brewers Festival Buzz Tent with mugs of his 1995 Old Boardhead Barleywine

It is already August and this means that Oregon Craft Beer Month has at last come to a conclusion. Another year, and more growth all around in the industry – more breweries, more volume, more events. For many August signifies that summer is in full swing and about a third of the way through, but for those who live for craft beer, this means that the busiest and most eventful month of July is now behind us. With quivering livers and many memories of what July meant – from the Oregon Craft Beer Month kickoff at Jeld Wen, to the finally roaring tent at the Oregon Brewers Guild – it has been undeniable to us that this past July was the biggest and most festive month yet. Here’s a look at some highlights that we experienced during July 2011: Read More…

Upright Brewing Flora Rustica Release, Belmont Station 14th Anniversary Beer, and Puckerfest Specialties

Upright Brewer Alex Ganum (left) and Belmont Station manager Neil Yandow

Upright brewer Gerritt IllPuckerfest continues throughout the week and weekend with special events and brewers each night. Wednesday July 20, Belmont Station will host Upright brewers Alex Ganum and Gerritt Ill for the bottle and draught release of their specially crafted Belmont Station 14th Anniversary Beer. Both brewers are former Belmont Station employees who devised a blend of four Upright brews, including three aged in Ransom Old Tom Gin barrels, two with Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus, and one with apricot puree. These flavors meld in a more than interesting fashion to unlock botanical notes and a fervent sourness.

Discover Sours, Wilds, and Funky Fruits at Belmont Station’s Fifth Annual Puckerfest

Puckerfest! July 18-24 at Belmont Station

Belmont StationBy definition, the word “pucker” may refer to an irregular wrinkle or fold; even in an archaic sense, it may relate to an agitation or perturbation. Similarly, the terms “sour” and “wild” evoke imagery that doesn’t easily concord with a notion of taste. “Sour” is oft ascribed to putridity, acerbity, and rancidity, while “wild” is frequently a word pointing toward the barbarous, feral, and chaotic. Yet, when we think in terms of beer (at least those of us who enjoy healthy doses of Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, and Pediococcus), all of these terms can inexplicably become alluring and enticing. And though puckering sour and wild brews are absolutely not for everyone (same could be said of hoppy beers), they have won over the hearts and palates of many beer lovers in almost cult-like fashion.

Belmont Station 14th Anniversary Ale brewed and blended by Upright will be released during Puckerfest

Always ahead of the curve, Belmont Station, behind beer guru Chris Ormand, recognized the potential of sour and wild beers quite early. From a time whenCantillon and Rodenbach may have seemed far more unusual to today when Cascade Brewing has taken the leap into a world of tart complexity, Belmont Station has remained steadfast with its passion for the vast beer gamut. And now in its fifth year, Puckerfest continues to unleash more and more anomalous and mouthwatering choices during the week between Portland International Beerfest and Oregon Brewers Festival.  Here’s what you can expect at this year’s Puckerfest happening July 18-24: Read More…

Hangin' at Brewers Union Local 180 Pub L to R: Dermot, Angelo, Jesse, and Amber

What a weekend! First of all, it was a birthday weekend. I was joined with fellow birthday brethren from some of Portland’s finest beer outposts including Neil from Belmont Station, Jonathan from Saraveza, and Isaac and Jesse of APEX on one hell of a camping expedition.

Brewers Union Local 180The group of us landed at Salmon Creek Falls campground in the Willamette National Forest near Oakridge, Oregon. If you are not familiar with Oakridge, it’s a beautifully serene town about 35 minutes’ drive east of Eugene off state highway 58. Here you will also find a true craft brew gem in Brewers Union Local 180, an authentic and intimate pub run by brewer Ted Sobel and his lovely wife Patty. Inspired by country pubs of England, in particular, its sister pub, the Woolpack Inn in Cumbria where Ted cut his teeth with pro brewing (click here to read our original post about the pub), Local 180 prides itself on excellently crafted cask-drawn Real ales. A “Real ale,” as defined by CAMRA (CAMpaign for Real Ale) is a “Beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide.”

On tap at Local 180 was a Read More…

Beer lovers unite at Breakside Collaboration Fest. L to R: Dean Pottle (Dean's Scene), Mike Wright (Beetje), Michel J. Brown (F.H. Steinbart), John Foyston (Oregonian), and Brant Kunz (Bottles)

The past weekend in Portland was a great one. Not just because of the bounty of spectacular beer happenings, but it was also in part due to the summery weather that at last arrived. As the hop bines darted skyward from such prodigious warmth, little time was allowed to fritter away any opportunity to take full advantage of what could register as a fleeting season. Here we will broach upon some of our weekend’s beer-related highlights with animus of returning with more details at a later time.
