Fort George News: Continued Expansion, Stout Month, More Events

Fort George Brewery

Fort George Brewery of Astoria, Oregon continues its impressive expansion efforts. A year ago, we reported about their initial growth from an 8-barrel brewery to a 30-barrel one that involved adding more than 40,000 square feet to their  downtown property.

Now with more space to grow into and a bottling and packaging line, Fort George has begun putting forth more brands to not only Clatsop County and the Portland area, but they have pushed into the Washington market as well. In recent weeks they’ve added two 120-barrel fermentors and one 120-barrel brite tank from Metalcraft Fabrication in Portland, tripling capacity in their production facility.

Fort George Brewery founders Chris Nemlowill (left) and Jack HarrisThanks to all of their hard work, Fort George will be adding two new flavors to their canned beer lineup that already includes Vortex IPA, 1811 Pre-Prohibition Lager, and Cavatica Stout. In February Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale will become available in 16-ounce tallboys, and later in April, their popular Quick Wit will also become commercially available in cans.

Fort George has also begun construction for expansion of their restaurant, although this is about a year out. Fort George’s Tim Ensign says “We have started construction on the second story above the current Fort George restaurant; the new space will more than double the current space.”

Fort George North V Bottle Release & Tasting @ Belmont Station

Fort George North V label

Fort George Brewery and Public House of Astoria, Oregon is pleased to announce the 22-ounce bottle release of their North V Strong Ale. This everchanging seasonal will embody the character of a fruit cake this year. Here’s the description of this year’s North:

A holiday tradition continues at Fort George Brewery with our Fifth rendition of the North series. Originally brewed to attend the Great American Beer and Barleywine Festival in Alaska we change this beer every year, but keep the Strong Ale base as a constant. Last year we imagined a Christmas tree being thrown into the beer and devised a recipe that included spruce buds, cranberries, and a giant candy-cane. This year we took another holiday icon, the fruitcake, and designed our holiday seasonal in its’ honor. A mash of barley, oats, wheat, rye, rich caramel and honey malts are mildly spiced with Cascade and Saaz hops, fermented with Fort George house yeast then allowed to condition on hand-splintered, rum inspired oak. A Glase Fruit concoction that includes cherries, pineapple, orange and lemon peel is dissolved into the finished beer to add the final touches. Designed and bottled to age, we are sure this version of the Fruit Cake will not be passed down for generations, but opened and imbibed at many a cheerful gathering.

Belmont Station will host a special release party for North V on Friday October 28, 2011 from 5-8PM. They will have 22oz bottles for sale (2 per customer limit 1 to enjoy and 1 to cellar).   North V will also flow on tap along with Fort George’s Drunkin Pumpkin.

John Foyston Art Show @ Fort George Brewery

The Beer Here's John Foyston at BeerMongersWhen the Fort George has been in the Oregonian newspaper, the writer has been John Foyston. Best known for being one of the top beer journalists in the Northwest–John has been writing about Oregon craft beer for 20 years–he’ll be at Fort George this month, not reporting, but showing off one of his more obscure talents, oil painting.

John’s art will be on display in our tap room during the 2nd Saturday Art Walk October 8th. John will be in Astoria for an artist’s reception on October 15th in the tap room, where you can meet him and talk art and beer (that will immediately follow the Barley’s Angels event) 4-7 p.m.

In the photo on the left, the late legendary Portland publican, Don Younger, admires his portrait that John painted. In recent years, John has begun painting “plein air” landscapes, with easel set up onsite.

You can see his writing regularly in his print column in the A & E section of the Oregonian as well as his blog, The Beer Here.
