Former Walking Man and Widmer Brewer Jacob Leonard Joins Breakside Brewery

Walking Man head brewer Jacob Leonard soon to brew for Breakside Brewery

In a region where brewers change teams more than ball players in the free agency era, another big name Portland brewer has announced he will be joining the ranks of a young, popular, and quickly rising brewery. It was recently announced that Jacob Leonard, 33, known best for his work at Walking Man Brewing in Stevenson, WA where he was a recipient of the 2007 Glen Hay Falconer Scholarship in conjunction with Siebel Institute of Technology, will soon be a co-brewmaster at Breakside Brewery in Portland. Most recently, Leonard took on a production brewer position at the end of 2010 with Widmer Brothers and Craft Brew Alliance of Portland, OR. Today the word came down from Breakside brewmaster Ben Edmunds that Leonard would be on board with the quickly growing brewery.

Bolt Minister New Walking Man Brewmaster,
Dan Munch to Craft Brew Alliance

Bolt Minister - announced as new Walking Man brewer

Craft Brew AllianceWe recently discovered some interesting news regarding a few new breweries in the Portland/Columbia Gorge region. Walking Man brewmaster Dan Munch has announced that he is leaving to pursue a brewing position with Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) in Portland. Following in the footsteps of his Walking Man predecessor, Jacob Leonard who is currently with CBA where Widmer, Redhook, and Kona beers are brewed. Munch took over the lead brewing responsibilities last February after Leonard departed for Portland. Munch is a graduate of Siebel Institute of Technology‘s Brewing Technology program and is sure to bring a lot to CBA’s ever-growing brewhouse.

Dan Munch - leaving Walking Man to assume brewing job with Craft Brew Alliance/Widmer Bros

Walking ManReplacing Munch at Walking Man will be Bolton “Bolt” Minister who has served as assistant brewer at the Rock Bottom Brewery  in Portland since March 2009. Before his time with Rock Bottom, he served as head brewer at Astoria Brewing at Wet Dog Cafe in Astoria, OR for two years. Minister starts his position at Walking Man on July 2, four days before Munch departs. Both brewers are excited about their new positions and so are those who have enjoyed their beers. Congratulations to both and best of luck to them in the future!

Old Town Pizza S.,T.E.A.M. Tapping @ Rock Bottom PDX

Scott Guckel, brewer at Old Town Pizza BrewingAs you might of heard, just shortly after releasing our first run of beers at Old Town Brewing Company, I burned my brewery down. Though the fire was well contained and quickly extinguished, the restaurant and brewery were closed due to smoke and water damage.   The good news is the North Portland location is set to reopen shortly.
In an effort to put off the inevitable shortage in my dwindling inventory, I have reached out to my fellow brewers during this halt in production. Due to short notice and scheduling demands this was a lot to ask. Thankfully, old co workers Charlie Hutchins and B?lt Minister were able to make some magic happen.
From these ashes our collaborative phoenix has arisen: S.,T.E.A.M. (Skot, Together Everyone Achieves More).  Brewing this beer was something of a spirit journey for the three of us as we combined our skills, experience and collective whimsy to bridge the States of Jefferson and Oregon with this Cascadian Common.
S.,T.E.A.M. (Skot, Together Everyone Achieves More) started at 11.8* plato, finishing at 2*, and is a 5.2%abv lager fermented at ale temperatures. We used a blend of European malts and choice Noble hops to interact pleasantly with the soft lager esters. We will be pouring this beer at both locations with a tapping party first at Rock Bottom on Thursday April 12th. Then Charlie, B?lt and I will be at the Old Town Pizza Company’s Downtown location on the following Friday for a social release. We also are looking to acquire guest taps at a few beer bars around town but have yet to have anything confirmed.

Hope to see you there,

Scott Guckel

Jean Claude Tapping @ PDX Rock Bottom

Bolt (Minister) came up with this Belgian table beer to celebrate his favorite holiday: the Vernal Equinox.  Light and refreshing, just like he imagines the weather is in Brussels.

The People’s Top 5 of 2011, A Look Ahead to 2012

2011 was a big year for craft beer

2011 was a peculiar year. For myself, personally, 2011 was filled with ups and downs. Some notable lows made the summer and fall months particularly difficult, but thanks to a strong finish, lots of wonderful craft beer related festivities, and America’s greatest growth yet in the craft beer boom, 2011 proved to be a year worth remembering.

We asked a number of craft beer minds to share with us some of the most memorable brews and brew events of the year as well as what they perceived as emerging trends in our industry. In picking the brains of many prominent characters who greatly impact the craft beer scene both locally and nationally, we seek to unfold what 2012 might have in store for us. Thanks to all who chimed in, and if you didn’t get your two cents in, feel free to comment with yours. Cheers! -Angelo Read More…

Weekend Beer Events Not To Miss/What You Might’ve Missed

Drinking mad Berliner Weiss at The BeerMongers with brewers (L to R) Chip Conlon, Bryan Kielty, and Jason McAdam

So… the meteorologist are saying something to the tune of 80 degrees this weekend in the Willamette Valley. Really?! Is summer going to grace us with a sneak preview? ‘Cause of late, the water levels have risen to the highest since 1996 when there was a big ol’ flood here. If you’ve been to the water front, you’ve probably noticed that the river isn’t far from the bridges. I digress…

This weekend, there’s a buttload of killer beer things cracking around Beervana. There has also been a bunch of great happenings that you might’ve missed out on (it’s easy to do ’round here). Okay, first let’s start with some of the events that have rocked this past week… Read More…
