Jason Webb, brewmaster at Portland U-Brew with a pint of ReFresh Hop Bloggerbrau

The goodly folks at Portland U-Brew have a lot going on during the month of December in addition to all the brewing in which they have to adhere. Gearing up for a festive holiday season, they’ve informed us about some interesting and flavorsome happenings at the popular Sellwood brewhouse and beyond:

Full Sail to Release Session “Fest” Red Lager

Session "Fest" Red Lager

Our friend Jimmy seems to have his finger on the pulse of craft beer. First he tells us about a brewmaster getting wasted and filling up pints with his own pee, now he clues us in to the upcoming release of Full Sail “Fest” Session Red. The beer to be called “Session Fest” (Brewpublic has been planning an upcoming event called Session Fest, too. We’ll see how that pans out…) appears to be a holiday release indicated by the red and green color scheme and bottle cap to read “Naughty, Nice.” The beer will not contain any holiday spicing  just hops, water, malted barley and yeast. Sounds like a wonderful brew; we can’t wait to try it. More info to come…

Puget Sound Beer Adventures – Part Three – Lazy Boy

The Lazy Boy himself, brewery Shawn Loring

By Dan Culver

Welcome to part three of the North Puget Sound Adventures series.  Just to give you brief recap, we started in Mulkiteo, WA at Diamond Knot Brewing and moved on to Everett with a visit to Scuttlebutt Brewing.  Our third destination in the area was another Everett favorite, Lazy Boy Brewing.  The brewery and taproom, just south of downtown is the best place to get your hands on the freshest and newest Lazy Boy brews.

Lazy Boy Tap List

Brewmaster and owner Shawn Loring and his brewing partner Kyle Jefferson keep the regular lineup on draught, along with some tasty and unique one-offs for anyone who strolls through the doors.  This is a place where you can Read More…

Mass Consumption – A Commonwealth of Craft Beer

Boston Beer Works brewers Zandy Zeiser (left) and Jack Hendler

Massachusetts is an excellent place to find craft beer. After all the Bay State is the home of patriot brewer Samuel Adams for which America’s largest craft brewery, Boston Beer Company, is named. It is also home to BeerAdvocate founders, brother Jason and Todd Alström. On a recent visit to Massachusetts, Brewpublic-style, some great brews were brought to light. Here is a look at some of the highlights from this particular expedition: Read More…

Christmas Eve ^2 @ TheBeerMongers

It's the most wonderful time for a BEER

On December 23rd from 4-11PM, The BeerMongers will be tapping five holiday ales just before the frenzy of family gatherings, wrapping paper and food comas. All beers will be available in 6oz and 12oz pours, except Fa La La La La which will also be served in 20-oz pints.

Here’s the important stuff:

Block 15 Figgy Pudding

This is the beer that inspired the event. A complex English Barleywine, aged in freshly emptied Brandy Barrles with mission figs, Ceylon cinnamon and nutmeg. 11% ABV, 43IBU

Double Mountain Fa La La La La

One of my favorites each winter, Fa La La La La will satisfy the hopheads in true to form Double Mountain fashion. 7.6% ABV, 83 IBU

Hair of the Dog 2010 Doggie Claws

A classic west coast style Barleywine, Doggie Claws is brewed with British crystal malts, Mt.Hood wild flower honey, as well as Amarillo and Simcoe hops. 11.5% ABV, IBU 70

Jolly Pumpkin Noel De Calabaza

A Belgian Dark Christmas Ale aged in oak barrels with characteristics of dark fruit, malt sweetness along with the expected Jolly Pumpkin funk. 9%ABV

Lompoc Bourbon Barrel 8 Malty Nights

This chocolate rye porter was brewed for Hanukkah in 2009 and then aged in bourbon barrels for nine months. 6.5%ABV

Rock Bottom Black Peter Tapping

This strong, spicy, black as night beer is a brewery favorite.  We brew it on St. Nicolas’ Day every year to remind everyone that if they’re good, St. Nick will give you an orange, and if you’re bad, Black Peter will put you in a sack and take you to Spain.  Both sound pretty good.

15 of the Best Winter Beers

Ho Ho Ho

As you may be aware of, the Northwest Brewing News recently released their best of list known as “the Readers Choice Awards.” This list is a partially accurate list of some of the best brewpubs, beer bars, breweries, and beer types. Despite some obvious ballet stuffing, the list outlines a depiction of some of the region’s favorite brew culture. Inspired by the year-end best of lists as well as the amazing lineup of brews featured recently at the Holiday Ale Fest, Brewpublic felt compelled to offer a short list of some of the best seasonally appropriate beers to try. Here’s 15 beers not to miss this winter. Find ‘em at your favorite beer stores and pubs around the Northwest. Read More…

Earth & Sky Farm

Earth & Sky Farm

Earth & Sky FarmWhat do Christmas trees and hops have in common? Well, besides both offering a wonderful piny aroma to the room, we discovered both are grown at Earth & Sky Farm in Oregon City.

Tim Ensign is known around the Oregon and Northern California craft beer community as a point man for Mountain Peoples Wine and Beer Distributors moving great brews like Bear Republic, Fort George, FiftyFifty and many more. However, during the four weekends leading up to December 25th, Ensign and his wife Jana are hard at work at Earth & Sky. “The weekend of December 4th, if the weather is clear, will likely be our busiest of the year (on the farm)” says Ensign. And it looks just like that will be the case according to meteorological forecasts. Ensign says that last year, the second week of the four was undoubtedly the busiest.
