Roscoe’s Brings Out the Hops for Their 4th Annual IPA Summit

Roscoe's Pub
One of Portland’s best craft beer bars celebrates hops with their annual IPA Summit.
Roscoe’s 4th Annual IPA Summit is sure to be a hit. I mean, who doesn’t love hoppy beer. IPA’s are the most consumed craft beer style according to the Brewers Association, and it’s easy to see why. The sticky, resinous cones grow like crazy in these parts. In fact the Yakima Valley of Washington and the Willamette Valley of Oregon are accountable for the majority of the hops grown in our continent. Join Jeremy and Quyen over at Roscoe’s (8105 SE Stark Street in Portland, OR) and check out the goodness for yourself, kicking off on Friday March 29, 2013. Here’s the lowdown from the Rosc-Bros: Read More…

Powered by Hops Rye IPA Release from Fort George’s Sweet Virginia Series

Tim "El Jefe" Ensign

by Jana Daisy-Ensign

Tim Ensign of Fort George brewing his Powered By Hops brewIt is not uncommon to find Fort George Brewery’s El Jefe of Sales and Distribution, Tim Ensign smiling. My husband is the type of guy who really embodies “living the dream.” After recently being invited back to brew a second batch of his, “Powered By Hops Rye IPA” at Fort George Brewery in Astoria, Oregon, he has been ecstatic. Fort George’s 8.5bbl “Sweet Virginia” brew system used to be the brew system that launched Fort George into the Pacific Northwest craft beer scene some 6 years ago. Since then, the brewery’s continued expansion has led to the installation of a 30-barrel production brewhouse, which fills thirsty 16-ounce cans for their five year-round offerings, known as “The Fort George Five” (with a sixth, seasonal can offering to be initially released next week). The brewery’s smaller brew system, is now more of an experimental brew system and the home base for a steady, varied offering of unique one-off beers.

In their new, “brew-share” program launched last July, the Fort George Brew Team have begun the fun project of allowing each brewer to design and brew their own beer from start to finish. Ensign has been lucky enough to be a part of this program, creating something delightful and hoppy. Here’s a description
from the brew master himself: Read More…

Texas’ Oldest Craft Brewery Releases Cascadian Dark Ale

Saint Arnold Icon Cascadian Dark Ale

Despite your view on what a hoppy dark ale should be dubbed, whether it be Black IPA, Cascadian Dark Ale, what have you, it’s nice to see the style that is a staple here in the Pacific Northwest get traction elsewhere. Especially in the South. Houston, Texas brewery Saint Arnold has just announced that they will be unveiling Icon Cascadian Dark Ale, a one-off brew from the state’s oldest brewery, inspired by an award-winning small homebrewed batch. In the heart of Texas you might not expect to find a beer referred to as a CDA. In fact you might assume it would be branded as a Texas Brown Ale. You might not know this but there is a connection to Texas from one of Oregon’s most beloved breweries, Fort George or Astoria. The coastal brewery purchased their up-scaled 30-barrel system from Saint Arnold a few years back and are making some Cascadian originals. We digress… Here’s the scoop from Houston and the good folks at Saint Arnold: Read More…

February Means the Return of Stout Month at Fort George Brewery in Astoria

Fort George Stout Month 2013
Just because the winter holidays are behind us and spring seasonal beer releases are beginning to emerge on shelves and on tap doesn’t mean that winter is over. And since we’re still in the midst of short days, gray skies, and cold weather, there seems no perfect mid-winter escape than to immerse ourselves in the world of dark, robust, and hardy stouts. Fort George Brewery of Astoria returns with their renowned Stout Month, a month-long celebration of the widest scope of the biggest, darkest offerings to date.
Fort George Cavatica Stout in Cans“We have gathered 14 House Stouts together to tap throughout the whole short month of February!” says Fort George’s Brian Bovenizer.  The recently expanded brewpub will feature 14 Stouts in 28 Days.  “As always,” says Bovenizer, “We will rotate some of our favorite Guest Stouts from all over the great northwest and beyond.”

Throughout the Fort George Brewery and Public House, and the Lovell Taproom, there will be dark beer pouring from the faucets.  Bovenizers says “The boards will be changed, and the coasters will be dark to hide the stains.  Test your tasting abilities by participating in the “Blind Taster Tray,” an 8 stout sampler of Fort George House Stouts.  If you can guess them all, you win.  If you can’t, you also win!”

“One of our favorites this year has been our Rye Barrel Aged Cavatica Stout.  Aged in Heaven Hills Rye Whiskey barrels, this beer will be released in Limited Edition 4-packs of 16-ounce cans.” say Bovenizer. This exclusive beer will be available in house only for the Festival of Dark Arts!
Festival of Dark Arts 2013
The culmination of Stout Month will be the Festival of Dark Arts on February 16th from 2 – 10pm.  Bovenizer tells us: “Here, we invite our stout friends to join us in tapping over 40 stouts for one day!  Along with over 40 stouts, we will have a host of other dark art.  How much?  You can expect a blacksmith forge, a glass blower, a tarot card reader, live music, dance, a Dark Art Gallery, old fashioned photo booth, tattoo artists, dancers, and more! “
Here’s a looks at the many killer dark beers that Fort George will showcase for 2013′s Stout Month. Don’t miss out! Read More…

Best of 2012 – The People’s Choice

2012 !

Each year since Brewpublic began in 2008, we’ve taken special pleasure in rounding up the best-of-the-year lists. Most often you’ve witnessed these year-end inventories in the form of top 5′s. And, to not let down, we’ve rounded up this year’s superlatives in a multi-part series we will bring you throughout the rest of the year.

For 2012, much like we did last year, asking craft beer experts, industry workers, enthusiasts, and friends to conjure up their fondest beer memories of 2012 as well as sharing what they eagerly anticipate for the future in the coming year. We’ve also asked these folks to attest to top trends witnessed in the craft beer scene over the past year as well as some favorite events of 2012.

While we realize that such lists are next to impossible to formulate with any real certainty, the process of thinking back on all of the remarkable brews tested and tasted is a fun and nostalgic process. We will not hold these reputable individuals to their beer choices with absoluteness, because we realize, as mentioned in the past, that choosing just one beer, or even only five for that matter, as a favorite, can be as constrictive and limiting as choosing a favorite song, work of art, or even friend. Variety is the spice of life, just as hops is readily that of Northwest craft brews. So, without further adieu, let’s hear what the people have to say. Read More…
