Saraveza’s 2nd Annual IIPA Fest

Saraveza's 2nd Annual IIPA Fest Sponsored By Brewpublic

Hey, Hopheads, mark your calendars for July 16 and 17th for Saraveza‘s 2nd Annual IIPA Fest. Since two I’s are better than one, the award winning staff at one of Portland’s greatest craft beer havens will be serving up more than 20 Imperial India Pale Ales for your palate’s pleasure. In fact, some of the beers will even be IIIPAs, or as Boneyard Beer-folk like to call it: the TRIPA! Hops galore! IBU to the high heavens! Look for one-of-a-kind rarities at this lupulinpalooza! Saraveza will doubling up on the food, too, with housemade B.B.L.T.s (yes, that’s Bacon Bacon) and live music. Look for your “free jar” tickets the week before the festival.

This year’s event reveals some one-of-a-kind Imperial IPAs exclusive to this festival, as well as many rare and sought after specialties.
Here’s the list so far: Read More…

Hop Head Night @ Lompoc Sidebar

Lompoc SidebarThe sun is shining and we couldn’t be happier! Even better, this Friday and Saturday at Sidebar is Hop Head Night. We’ll be turning over the Sidebar taps to a celebration of lupulin indulgence! The lineup includes Peregrine Imperial IPA, a hop bomb that pours a medium orange color with a hoppy aroma reminiscent of tropical fruit and pine needles. Its flavor is massively hoppy but balanced by Golden Promise, Crystal and Aromatic malts; C-Son’s Greetings, our holiday Imperial IPA brewed and dry-hopped with all seven “C” hops (Crystal, Cluster, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Columbus and Challenger) for a full hop flavor. It’s deep copper in color with a piney, citrusy, floral and resinous aroma to complement its rich caramel malt finish and endless developing hop presence; Genesis IPA – In the beginning there was only…..IPA. The first beer ever brewed on Lompoc’s new brew system, Genesis has a copper color, slight bitterness and hoppy aroma; Centennial IPA, a classic Northwest IPA brewed with Crystal malts that give it a rich golden color. Centennial hops provide a floral nose and sharp bitter finish; Kick Axe Dry Hopped Pale Ale, our tribute to the Timber’s Army. This crisp, easy drinking pale ale was dry-hopped in the fermenter with Cascades giving off a huge hop aroma; and finally, C-Note Imperial Pale Ale – to call this beer hoppy would be an understatement. It’s brewed with the seven “C” hops and pushes the bitterness limit to 100 International Bitterness Units. Sidebar is open Friday 4-10 pm and Saturday, 2-10 pm and is located at 3901 N Williams, just past Pix Patisserie.

Breakside Night of the Dry Hops

Breakside BreweryNight of the Dry Hops! In the spirit of the popular Night of the Smoked Porters, Breakside has brewed five test batches of its summer pale ale, each dry hopped with a different, less common American hop varietal. No Simcoe, Amarillo, or Citra here! The featured hops are Newport, Vanguard, Ahtanum, Santiam, and Galena. The beers will be served side by side in a sampler tray, and customers will have the chance to vote on a People’s Choice Hop. The winning hop will then be featured in the larger batch of the brewery’s summer pale ale.

Snipes Mountain’s Chris Miller Leaves for California to Start His Own Brewery

Berryessa Brewing's Chris Miller

One of Washington and the Pacific Northwest’s most talented brewers, Chris Miller, recently informed us that he will be leaving Snipes Mountain Brewing of Sunnyside, WA, after more than three years, to open his own brewery in Northern California. Miller, 32, is widely known for his affinity for getting the most out of hops from Yakima’s nearby hopyards. Wowing palates around the Northwest at events like Yakima’s Fresh Hop Festival, Miller is taking the next big step to fulfilling his lifelong dream and is starting a brewery of his own. His old post will be taken over by his assistant Chad Roberts.

Chris Miller (center) at Skamania's Celebration of Beer Weekend in Stevenson, WAMiller’s new venture, Berryessa Brewing, named for a nearby lake, will be in the Northern California town of Winters in Yolo County, about 30 miles from Sacramento and 60 miles from San Francisco in the heart of the region’s wine country. In fact, Berryessa’s brewing facility, will begin in an existing building last occupied by Berryessa Gap Vineyards. The winery which Read More…

This is a Sabotage!

By Marc Demeule

I’m not upset at all.  It is a physical law that makes that a batch of beer possibly become empty.  That’s what happened with one of the last creations of Le Bénélux, an India pale ale named Sabotage.  According to the beer geek crew of Montréal, this IPA brewed with Nelson Sauvin hops is a real hoppy experience.

I simply wanted to make my own opinion of this brew and share it to you.  It seems that I showed up too late and missed out.  It could have been a real sabotage, but Read More…

Fresh Hops in Eastern Oregon
an Interview with Beer Valley’s Pete Ricks

Beer Valley Brewing in Ontario, Oregon may be known for being the state’s easternmost brewery (it is closer to Boise, Idaho than it is to Portland), but what really defines the brewery is brewer Pete Ricks’ love for brewing boldly hopped beers. We caught up with Mr. Ricks amidst hops harvest season to get more insight on his brewery that is nearly 400 miles from Portland to learn of the recent hoppenings and goings-on at Beer Valley.

You are a busy man, Pete, especially during the hops harvest season. What does the process of selecting hop and brewing your specialty fresh hopped beers look like?

Pete Ricks: All of our fresh hop brews start with Read More…
