Block 15 Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Block 15 Restaurant & Brewery

It’s hard to believe that Block 15 Brewery has been open for five years. Its seems like it was just yesterday when the Corvallis brewpub opened its doors, but then again, right off the starting blocks, the beer has been better than most. “What a journey it has been” says founder Nick Arzner. “We want to thank our wonderful customers and the Corvallis community for their support. We also want to thank our amazing staff for all of their hard work and dedication.”

Nick Arzner of Block 15 BrewingJoin Block 15 on Saturday March 2, 2013 for a not to miss celebration of their first half-decade with some incredibly mouthwatering offerings including locally sourced food and beer. “We are releasing a couple gems from our wild cellar, featuring an awesome Anniversary burger, dancing to the live music of The Bon Ton Roulet, discounting apparel, and featuring Hoppy Hour all day long!”

Double Mountain Brewery Turns 6, With Rock

Double Mountain 6th Anniversary PartyPress Release:

HELL’S BELLES Headlines This Year’s Anniversary Party on Saturday, March 16 at the Brewery

It’s that time of year again when we toss up the big tent, fill the taps with all we’ve got and throw a shindig to thank all our friends for another great year. The Double Mountain Anniversary Party has become a Northwest institution, and this year’s 6th Anniversary gig will carry the fun even higher.

The all-day party will culminate with the awesome musical stylings of Hell’s Belles, the all-girl AC/DC cover band that has torched stages across the nation. HB will be supported by a strong roster of local acts including the rockin’ country of Brewer’s Grade (formerly known as Unwound); surf rockers Audio Amigos; and local acoustic acts Shed Shakers and Sid & Al.

On the beer front, three bars will be dispensing a total of two dozen different Double Mountain ales and lagers, many of them from the brewers’ reserve stash. We will be doing half- as well as full-pours into a souvenir glass mug this year, to enable our fans to sample a wider variety. Pizza by-the-slice (new this year) and sandwiches will also be available. $5 admission for adults includes the souvenir mug; kids are welcome with parent/guardian until 5pm.

Bailey’s Taproom Makes Hip-Hop Video

Tip of the hat to  WineIsDivine.com for pointing us toward this video. Two of Bailey’s Taproom‘s finest beertenders Michael O’Connor (also a contributor to Brewpublic) directed this video with hip-hop outfit Black Sleep featuring Bailey’s beer slinger Bill Munighan (second emcee to spit on the track).

For O’Connor, an accomplished student of film, this is not his first rodeo. The back-packer indie hip-hop cut “Astro Creeps” is just one example of his production abilities in his growing arsenal. You may remember a popular NW Film School video short O’Connor did, “Beer Porn” featured here on this very site.

As WineIsDivine.com’s Anthony Garcia points out in their post, Portland is a Read More…

Upright Brewing “Untitled” Bad Brains Bottle Release @ Saraveza’s Bad Habit Room

Upright Brewing, Portland’s first farmhouse-style brewery celebrates Black Friday appropriately with a new bottle release “Untitled” brewed in tribute to Punk band Bad Brains.

The release party at Saraveza’s newly remodeled Bad Habit Room includes a screening of the Bad Brains documentary “A Band in DC” and a listening party for their new album “Into the Future” released the same week on Megaforce Records. Meet Upright Brewing’s Brewer/Owner Alex Ganum, Point Blank Distributing’s Morgan Torngren-Tatman who conceptualized the beer and label artist Ezra Johnson-Greenough. Look for 4 different Upright brews on tap including the Untitled “Bad Brains” beer. Limited edition T-Shirts featuring the Untitled Bad Brains beer label will also be available for purchase for $15 as well as bottles to go.

“Untitled”, a beer with no official name but inspired by the seminal D.C. punk band Bad Brains, is a double batch that is being released in both draft and bottled form. Made in a similar vein to 2010′s imperial pilsener-style “Clash Beer”, this one uses a nearly identical recipe but with just enough highly roasted malts to lend it a very dark brown color. The lager maintains a slight hoppy edge from perle, liberty, and tettnanger varieties but stays smooth all around. It also has the distinction of being the first true lager fermented in one of our open tanks. 6.4%

From here on out the two imperial lagers will be released in bottles every other year, with 2013 marking the return of the Clash beer while the Bad Brains beer will come back in 2014.

About Upright Brewing:
Upright Brewing specializes in farmhouse inspired beers rooted in France and Belgium but made with local ingredients and a Pacific Northwest twist, while also dabbling in both classic and quirky projects from around the world. The name is a reference to Charles Mingus and his primary instrument. Mingus was a musician whose compositions defy categorization. At Upright the recipes and processes are decidedly unbound, making for a true hybrid style that shares Mingus’ spirit of exercising creativity and craft.

It’s a return to form for the band that helped define American Punk and Hardcore music. http://www.badbrains.com/

“This album takes us back to self-produced record shines with Bad Brains’ true sense of freedom and musical experimentation, with blends of soulful backgrounds meshed with blistering hardcore and metal riffs, with classic dub,” says Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains.

Berryessa Brewing Brings Cascadian-inspired Craft Beer To Northern California’s Wine Country

Berryessa Brewing Co.

Lovers of craft beer in Northern California now have a great new brewery to get excited about in Berryessa Brewing of Winters.

Berryessa Brewing's Chris MillerFolks in the Pacific Northwest, particularly Washington State are quite familiar with the craft beers from brewmaster Chris Miller. Miller’s award winning beers during his tenure at Snipes Mountain Brewing in Sunnyside, WA garnered attention from beer lovers across the West Coast and even nationally. From the easy drinking and award winning Coyote Moon Brown ale to Miller’s signature Zombie Killer Fresh Hop IPA that won people’s choice at the Yakima Fresh Hop Festival, the brewer captivated the hearts and palates of those who were fortunate enough to experience his liquid wares. Miller’s exploration of barrel-aging and wild ales also proved to be an invaluable part of his artisan repertoire.

Now, after nearly four years at Snipes Mountain, Miller has relocated in Northern California in the town of Winters and has started Berryessa Brewing, his very own 20-barrel brewery in the heart of wine country that shares a site with the popular Berryessa Gap Winery (Read our original post “Snipes Mountain’s Chris Miller Leaves for California to Start His Own Brewery“). The name Berryessa comes from Lake Berryessa, which is depicted on the brewery’s logo. Lake Berryessa is the largest lake in nearby Napa County where boating and recreational sporting is enjoyed. The lake is also a major source of water and hydroelectricity to the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. About an hour north of San Francisco, up the I-505, the area offers an escape from the big city’s hustle and bustle.

Berryessa Brewing quietly opened on October 1, 2011 but is ramping things up for their official grand opening party this Sunday November 11, happening from noon until 7 p.m. On this day, taplines with be stocked with several of Miller’s interesting and innovative brews. Miller’s lovely wife Lori is in charge of managing the taproom.

Deschutes River Recordings – Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper

“I was into these guys before anybody” I sometimes like to think. I got my first taste of Blitzen Trapper back in the early 2000s when the band lead by Eric Earley was known as Garmonbozia. They made several appearances on my college radio station KPSU at Portland State University where I served as music director for a half decade. Here in the second installation of Deschutes Brewery‘s Deschutes River Recordings, Earley and company return for a stellar cover of The Band’s Up On Cripple Creek, originally released in 1970. These recordings in this series are to benefit the Deschutes River Conservancy.

In the second Deschutes River Recording, Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper adds a rough-hewn edge to “Up on Cripple Creek.” It’s another river song, sung riverside, to benefit the Deschutes River Conservancy. Free downloads available at http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/river-recordings

Occidental Brewing’s 2nd Annual Oktoberfest @ Cathedral Park

Occidental Oktoberfest 2012

Occidental Brewing will host its second annual Oktoberfest Saturday, September 29, from noon
to 10 PM. Following last year’s successful event, we expect even more folks to join us for the release
of our 2012 Festbier as well as live music and great German food.

This year’s Festbier will be a rich yet quaffable lager in the old tradition of Oktoberfest beers before
light colors and flavors began to dominate the style. German noble hops will provide a delicate hop
character to pair with a firm malt profile featuring Munich and Vienna malts. Also on offer will be
Occidental’s regular lineup of German-inspired brews. Hmmm, beer…

Occidental Brewers Ben (left) and Dan EnglerPortland stars of the Euroslav gypsy scene, Chervona, return to headline with their wild, russo-roma-balko dance party. Other musical guests will perform throughout the day.

Urban German will be on hand to feed our hungry revellers this year with an amazing menu of German snacks and entrees, including sausages, roast, spätzle, pretzels and more.

Just as last year, the fest takes place at the brewery and the adjacent courtyard at Cathedral Park Place near the base of the St. Johns Bridge and beautiful Cathedral Park, 6635 N Baltimore Ave. Theevent is free to attend, and minors are welcome.

Please join us for great beer, food, music, and company.

Prost!
