It’s February! Let the Stouts and Bourbons Flow

Barrels at Block 15 Brewery

February is here and this means that two of the year’s boldest month-long beer events are happening in Oregon – Fort George Brewery’s Stout Month and Block 15 Brewery’s Bourbon Month.

Fort George Stout Month February 2012It is February, the shortest month of the year, but this year it is a little longer thanks to it being leap year. That means every four years an added day is tacked on to the end of the month to synchronize with the astronomical year. What does this mean specifically? Well, for beer lovers here it means one more day to enjoy two of the best month-long celebrations around. Fort George Brewery of Astoria is returning their much anticipated Stout Month. For the full month of February, the artisan brew house will pay homage to rich, roasted barley delight. Each year since 2007, this month-long event sees the brewery’s public house surprisingly more hopping than in some coastal summer months. To the appeasement of beer zealots, this year’s Stout Month at the Fort will be bigger and better than ever thanks to added space and an expanded brewery. There will be at least eight of their own stouts presented, and the pub and taproom will also showcase some regional breweries’ most limited specialty brews.

Fort George News: Continued Expansion, Stout Month, More Events

Fort George Brewery

Fort George Brewery of Astoria, Oregon continues its impressive expansion efforts. A year ago, we reported about their initial growth from an 8-barrel brewery to a 30-barrel one that involved adding more than 40,000 square feet to their  downtown property.

Now with more space to grow into and a bottling and packaging line, Fort George has begun putting forth more brands to not only Clatsop County and the Portland area, but they have pushed into the Washington market as well. In recent weeks they’ve added two 120-barrel fermentors and one 120-barrel brite tank from Metalcraft Fabrication in Portland, tripling capacity in their production facility.

Fort George Brewery founders Chris Nemlowill (left) and Jack HarrisThanks to all of their hard work, Fort George will be adding two new flavors to their canned beer lineup that already includes Vortex IPA, 1811 Pre-Prohibition Lager, and Cavatica Stout. In February Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale will become available in 16-ounce tallboys, and later in April, their popular Quick Wit will also become commercially available in cans.

Fort George has also begun construction for expansion of their restaurant, although this is about a year out. Fort George’s Tim Ensign says “We have started construction on the second story above the current Fort George restaurant; the new space will more than double the current space.”

16th Annual Holiday Ale Fest – 10 Must Try Beers

16th Annual Holiday Ale Festival

The five day extravaganza that is Holiday Ale Fest (HAF), you know, the biggest winter beer fest on the West Coast, is upon us. Beginning at 2PM on Wednesday November 30, 2011 and lasting throughout the weekend, this beer lover’s occupation of Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse square once again will bring merriment to the space beneath several heated tents.

Each day at HAF brings to light new select vintage and one-of-a-kind brews not to be missed. As a whole, the selection is quite daunting, with mostly above 7% ABV one-offs as the focus. Curator Preston Weesner, who also works as general manager at Cascade Brewing’s Barrel House, a boutique pub mongering some of the region’s most touted sours, has been calculatingly stowing away special kegs while encouraging breweries to formulate new and insightful styles. This year’s lineup is no exception to the ever awe-inspiring score of brews HAF has continued to build upon. Here’s ten beers that we greatly look forward to tasting, and if you are as fanatical about beer as we are, you might just want to seek out as well: Read More…

Gravity-fed Vertigo

Mike Haines of Vertigo Brewing

By D.J. Paul

During the past few months of winter, downtown Portland’s Bailey’s Taproom has been hosting Firkin Mondays.  They’ve already featured brews from Breakside, Laurelwood, Alameda, Rock Bottom, HUB, Upright, Burnside, Pyramid, Coalition and Bridgeport.

Vertigo BrewingThis past Monday featured firkin was from Hillsboro’s nano-brewery, Vertigo Brewing. One of the founders, Mike Haines, brought over his Oatmeal Stout for all to enjoy. This stout developed a very deep, dark brown appearance. Due to it being poured from a firkin the head was small but offered a nice tan color. The beer itself had nice malty roast sweetness to it along with a nice body.  Vertigo’s Oatmeal Stout is a nice easy drinking stout a bit above 5% ABV and an excellent way to celebrate the start of St. Patrick’s Day week.

There are two more Firkin Mondays on the calendar at Bailey’s. Left to pour on the gravity-fed firkin is a Read More…
