Washington State Beer Tax Could Possibly Quadruple

WA Brewers GuildBy D.J. Paul

As states start squeezing more and more industries to cough up more taxes to assist in budget shortfalls the brewing industry is beginning to feel the pinch. This could happen here in the Pacific Northwest in Washington State. This link provides state by state data on their beer excise tax rate as of January 1, 2013.

The proposed budget that was announced on April 10th from Washington Gov. Jay Inslee will eliminate the $15.50 per barrel tax exemption that smaller Washington breweries (less than 60,000 barrels per year) currently receive.  What this tax proposal will do is increase the tax rate on Washington produced beer from Read More…

Elysian Brewing to Release Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale

Elysian Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale

Press release:
It’s a Psychedelic Freakout! Superfuzz to release April 1!

Grok this: what if the world were an orange–a blood orange–and there were Citra and Amarillo hop cones orbiting all around it, with just a dusting of blood orange peel, and it was all, like, an atom? Heavy, right? Well dig this: just to keep things a little blurred around the edges, the mad chemists at Elysian Brewing have come up with Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale Ale. It’ll be available at groovy taverns, restaurants and stores beginning April 1 in six-packs, 22-ounce bottles and on draft.
Elysian Brewing Co.You’ve heard the story before: the Man’s been throwing his weight around again, muscling people all over town with super-uninteresting beer. Enter Superfuzz, a one-beer crusade against the oppressive ordinary. He can relate to other ales, with an easygoing blend of Northwest Pale, Munich and Dextri-pils malts, but where the hops and the blood orange come in, he’s a complicated guy. Read More…

75+ New Craft Beer Labels from the Pacific Northwest

Widmer Green & Gold Forever

As we move into the new year, we see no slowdown in the number of new beers shooting down the perpetual pipeline. It’s growth, growth, and more growth. Popular craft breweries of the Northwest such as Widmer, Ninkasi, Redhook, and Pyramid are getting more and more prolific to cater to the exponentially excited interest of craft beer drinkers. Craft lagers in particular appear to be a returning trend in this post-Prohibition era. It may be less cost effective than brewing ales since these bottom-fermenting brews take more time to condition properly, but just like barrel-aged offerings, our palates are worth the wait.

Portland Brewing Cracked Compass India Style LagerBy looking through these new releases, we see a few other trends such as more fruit, chocolate, and vanilla infused releases, rye beers, and of the lagers, the IPL style is taking shape as a strong contender for a potential new American Brewers Association category.

Many new breweries are always popping up, like the heavily hyped Read More…

Full Sail’s first release in their new pub ale series is a brown, and Woodinville, Washington’s Redhook Brewery has also announced the return of their seasonal Mudslinger Brown Ale.

With a tagline of “Redhook STILL Likes it Dirty” (which we don’t really understand), Redhook provides the following information for their returning Mudslinger: Read More…
