2022 Great American Beer Festival: Oregon Breweries Win 18 Medals as Washington Breweries Win 19 Medals
Over the weekend, the 2022 Great American Beer Festival awarded 300 medals to the best beers in the United States. The awards ceremony was held on Saturday morning at the Bellco Theatre in Denver during the 40th anniversary of the Great American Beer Festival.
Presented by the Brewers Association, this year’s judging saw a record number of beers entered and was the first time the festival itself hosted attendees since 2019. Last year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in-person awards ceremony took place during the Craft Brewers Conference also at the Bellco Theatre in Denver on September 10th.
Award-winning breweries at the competition received Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in 98 beer categories covering 177 different beer styles (including all subcategories). Of these 268 medal-winning winning breweries, 18 were first time GABF winners. Here in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon breweries were awarded 18 medals, three more than in 2021, while Washington breweries were awarded 19 medals this year.
The 36th edition of the GABF competition took place in three phases over a period of nine days and was judged by 235 beer experts from seven countries, including the U.S. In addition to a record amount of 9,904 commercial brewery entries from 2,1654 breweries, the judging panel also evaluated 35 Pro-Am entries and 94 Collaboration entries. The competition was made possible with the generous assistance of 310 volunteers.
“Each year the Great American Beer Festival showcases the best that American brewers have to offer,” said Chris Williams, competition director, Great American Beer Festival. “With 9,904 entries, this year’s competition was the most competitive to date. Congratulations to all the winners who truly demonstrated why the U.S. is the best brewing nation in the world.”
The most entered category was American Style India Pale Ale with 423 entries. While the least entered category was American Sour Ale with just 25 entries with Little Beast Brewing taking home the Gold.
North Park Brewery from San Diego, California took home the highest number of medals. It took home a Gold, a Silver and two Bronze Medals. It also earned the 2,001–5,000 Barrels Brewery and Brewer of the Year award.
Oregon breweries took home 18 medals – 7 Gold, 7 Silver, and 4 Bronze. However, our neighbors to the north in Washington took home 19 medals – 7 Gold, 5 Silver, and 7 Bronze from this year’s GABF. Medal winning breweries from Oregon include 10 Barrel Brewing; Alesong Brewing and Blending; Breakside Brewery (NE Dekum, Slabtown and Milwaukie); ColdFire Brewing Company; Deschutes Brewery (Bend and Portland); GoodLife Brewing; Great Notion Brewing; Little Beast Brewing; McMenamins Breweries; Oregon City Brewing; pFriem Family Brewers; Sunriver Brewing; and Von Ebert Brewing.
The Specialty Berliner-Style Weisse category was swept by Oregon breweries. The Beaver State took home all three medals with 10 Barrel winning Gold, followed by Breakside Brewery with a Silver and Oregon City Brewing with a Bronze.
