2022 National Homebrew Competition Winners Announced

During this past weekend, the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) – the national not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the hobby of homebrewing – announced the winners of the 2022 National Homebrew Competition. These winners fo the world’s largest amateur homebrew competition were recognized for the most outstanding homemade beer, mead, and cider. In total, 132 medals in 44 categories were awarded to amateur brewers at an awards ceremony Saturday evening during the 44th annual Homebrew Con conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Three Portland area homebrewers took home four awards from the 2022 ceremony. Jordan Folks of the Portland Brewers Collective took home Gold in Belgian Ale and American Wild Ale Categories, while Scott Nieradka of the Oregon Brew Crew took home Gold in Amber European Beer, and Mark Beck of the Portland Brewers Collective took home Silver in Strong Belgian Ale.

In addition to these three winners from Portland, another Oregon member of the brewing community received an award. Denny Conn of Eugene received the American Homebrewers Association Governing Committee Award that’s awarded for outstanding service to the community of homebrewers.

The 45th annual Homebrew Con will take place from June 22-24, 2023 in San Diego, California.

This year’s competition saw more than 2,940 entries from 1,187 homebrewers located in 48 states, Washington, D.C., and seven countries. In total, 159,770 entries have been evaluated since the inaugural AHA National Homebrew Competition in 1979 in Boulder, Colo.

Category 26: Strong Belgian Ale (124 entries)
GOLD: Joseph Belevender, Warren, Mich.
SILVER: Mark Beck, Portland, Ore.
BRONZE: Brian Lasure, Highlands, N.C.

Category 17: American IPA (117 entries)
GOLD: Max Brown, Antioch, Calif.
SILVER: Mike Bulter, Stephanie Butler, Olathe, Kan.
BRONZE: Eric Bridges, Chula Vista, Calif.

Category 28: Fruit Beer (113 entries)
GOLD: Chico Milani, Florianópolis, Brazil
SILVER: John Spinella, New Hartford, N.Y.
BRONZE: Joseph Daly, Garden City, N.Y.

In addition to category style awards, six major awards recognizing overall brewing excellence were presented.

HOMEBREW CON
This year’s 44th annual Homebrew Con returned to an in-person three-day conference where more than 1,300 homebrewers and fermentation hobbyists attended educational sessions and social events, including a mini craft beer festival and “Club Night,” featuring 45 U.S. homebrew clubs with elaborate booths and creative brews. During the NHC awards ceremony, individuals and businesses were also recognized for their outstanding contributions to the homebrewing community.
