Oregon Breweries Take Home 2023 World Beer Cup Awards

The results are in from the 2023 World Beer Cup. Yesterday, the World Beer Cup Awards Ceremony took place in Nashville, Tennessee at the conclusion of the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference that’s hosted by the Brewers Association. During the awards ceremony, 307 winners were announced.

Up until 2022, the World Beer Cup was held every other year. This changed last year, and now the global competition is held on a yearly basis. This move is likely due to the competition being a large revenue source for the Brewers Association. This year the entry cost was $180 per beer along with providing a case of beer at no charge. These entrance frees can definitely place a financial burden on many fledgling craft brewers.

For the 2023 competition, there were 10,213 entries from 2,376 breweries from 51 countries. This is less entries than there were in last year’s World Beer Cup. In 2022, there were 10,542 entries from 2,493 breweries representing 57 countries. Going back further to 2018 when the World Beer Cup was last held until last year, there were only 8,234 entries from 2,515 breweries representing 66 countries.

Circling back to the competition itself, the World Beer Cup offered up awards in 103 beer categories covering 176 different beer styles, including all subcategories. A gold, silver, and bronze award was available in each category. However, in two categories – Experimental IPA and English Ale – a gold award was not awarded.

Judging for the World Beer Cup took place over 18 sessions and 9 days. A panel of 272 judges from 26 countries evaluated the 10,213 beers that were entered.

“The World Beer Cup brings together the finest brewers and beers from around the globe and celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and passion for great beer,” said Chris Williams, World Beer Cup competition director. “Receiving a World Beer Cup award is a testament to quality and innovation, and we commend this year’s winners for setting the bar higher than ever.”

Of the 307 recognized winners, Oregon breweries did quite well earning 22 total awards. Washington breweries earned 13 awards while Idaho breweries earned 2 awards and an Alaska brewery earned 1 award.

Central Oregon breweries took home 10 awards while Portland area breweries took home 9 awards. 10 Barrel Brewing earned four awards, Sunriver Brewing earned three awards and Bend Brewing Co. earned two awards. Portland’s Grains of Wrath location was honored with two awards.

Sunriver Brewing was ecstatic for their three awards. “Our multiple wins at the 2023 WBC are the apex accomplishment for the Sunriver Brewing team,” said Brett Thomas, Director of Brewing Operations at Sunriver Brewing Company. ” The brewery’s culture of quality, work ethic, and dedication to independent craft beer are reflected in these awards.”

Breaking it down even more, Von Ebert was awarded Gold for its Pils in the German-Style Pilsener that had 233 entries. Oregon breweries did quite well in the American-Style Strong Pale Ale category with Sunriver Brewing taking home Gold for its Something Dank This Way Comes and Breakside Brewery taking home Silver for its Breakside IPA.

Established in 1996, the World Beer Cup celebrates the art and science of brewing globally and creates greater consumer awareness about different beer styles and flavor profiles. Previously a biennial event, the competition was annualized last year, making 2023 the first back-to-back competition.

The 2024 CBC will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 21 – 24, 2024 with the World Beer Cup taking place on the final day.
