Anniversaries, New Beers, City of Goses Fest – Beer Events Beginning May 25

Rob Widmer delivered a keg of Hefeweizen to the first 100 Days of Hefe kickoff in the little red Datsun pickup he and brother Kurt “borrowed” from their dad in 1984 when they opened the brewery. They put on more that 160,000 miles delivering beer and picking up supplies and keep the truck in running condition to this day. (FoystonFoto)

Anniversaries, new beers and an all-Gose beerfest take place this Memorial Day Weekend. Here a listing of many of the beer events for the week of May 25th.

Hefe Berry Lime Meet the Brewer Party
4-6 p.m. Widmer Brothers Brewing Pub, 955 N. Russell St.;
For this year’s 100 Days of Hefe celebration, the brewery came up with Hefe Berry Lime, a playful take on Hefe, brewed with a blend of Oregon marionberries, blackberries, lime, and kaffir lime leaves. The result is a tart and refreshing, wheat beer that is perfect for the warmer summer months ahead. “It was a lot of fun coming up with Hefe Berry Lime in our Innovation Brewery and to see it in six packs now,” says Innovation Brewmaster Tom Bleigh. “Widmer Brothers has played with its Hefe recipe for over 20 years – notably with Widberry in the nineties – and it is great to carry on the tradition. Hefe Berry Lime shares some similarities with Widberry, but it is unique and modern at the same time.” You can sample the beer and meet the brewers at the pub today.

Burnside Brewing’s New Look/Montavilla Brew Works Tasting
5-8 p.m. Thursday May 25, Belmont Station, 4500 SE Stark St.
The Burnside crew introduces three new beers and their new look and labels with this tasting.
Sakura Gose – Brewed w/ Japanese salt & cured cherry blossoms

Too Sticky to Roll – IRA

Plus Montavilla Brew Works founder and brewer Michael Kora introduces his love for Belgian beer and taps three Abbey inspired beers: Dubbel, Tripel and Belgian Strong Dark.

Flights of Fury: Kung Fu IPA and Movie Night
4 p.m. Thursday May 25, Lompoc Sidebar, 3901 N Williams Ave.;
Join the Lompockians for a double feature of new IPAs and Kung Fu movies. The brewery will be offering taster trays of its six IPAs, and a 7 p.m. showing of “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin,” the movie that defined the Kung Fu genre.

The Flights of Fury taster tray will cost $8 and feature tastes of the following:

Drunken Panda IPA: This collaboration with EaT Oyster Bar is golden in color with a citrus and floral aroma. There is a spicy bitterness with hints of tangerine and a creamy mouthfeel.

Enter the Dank IPA: This IPA offers the ultimate challenge of ancient and deadly weapons…hops. Full of pithy citrus rind, ripe fruits and a strong hop bitterness, the hazy red color and huge citrus nose will overtake your senses.

5 Hops of Death IPA: Trained in secret, honed to perfection, the 5 Hops of Death have come to attack your taste buds with delicious hop flavor. Pacific Jade, Green Bullet, Sorachi Ace, Ultra and Galaxy hops are all fighting for dominance, as this beer packs a mighty punch.

Hoppy Tiger Bitter Dragon IPA: Green Destiny may be a sword in the movie, but in this beer hops are the Green Destiny. A collaboration with Swedish brewer Marie Kusa, this IPA packs a big tangerine and papaya nose with floral and tropical notes from Mosaic and Simcoe marrying each other. It has a light copper-color and the malt delivers mild caramel flavors.

Ip Man IPA: This collaboration with Ross Island Brewing was named in honor of Ip Man, one of the first instructors to publicly teach the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun Kung Fu. It’s light copper in color with a spicy, lingering bitterness and notes of apricot, red grapefruit and pine.

The 36th Chamber of IPA: After mastering all the known disciplines, the time for sharing the Truths of the Secret Arts is upon us… The 36th Chamber of IPA expands the consciousness of the masses – and the palate – as it teaches the resolve and inner strength necessary to fight against the oppression of boring beer. Thirty-six pounds of hops pounce upon the senses and strike a balance between peppery and citrusy, and between earthy and divine. Subtle caramel notes and five kinds of hops dwell within The 36th Chamber as they mysteriously work in unison to form a straw colored, spicy, savory and irresistibly refreshing tribute to the power of resistance.

Upright & Bazi Sole Composition Quad, 2017 bottle release: the quad collaboration that was bottled conditioned in 2016 and has been aging for the last year. This is a very small batch production and will only be available at Bazi for the anniversary celebration.

Bazi Hofbrouw Tripel, vintage 2015: 8.5% ABV, brewed at ‘t Hofbrouwerijke in Beerzel, Belgium, golden light, slightly sweet with a dry bitter finish. Bottle conditioned for aging. Bottles will be available for onsite enjoyment or to go.

Deliria, 2017 bottle release: 8.5% ABV, brewed by Hilda and 14 other women at Huyghe Brewery in Melle, Belgium to mark International Women’s Day. Deliria has a fine, mild bitterness and a splendid round feel in the mouth which evolves well. Bottles will be available for onsite enjoyment or to go.

Additional Beers on Draft:

Alesong Brett Mosaic Saison: French-style saison fermented with a blend of Brettanomyces yeasts. After aging, it was dry-hopped liberally with Mosaic hops to complement the ripe pineapple, mango, grapefruit, and rose-like flavors that evolved during the aging time in French oak barrels.

2015 De Troch Private Domain LambicX: every Lambic with the Lambickx™ name is made from casks personally tasted and chosen by Don Feinberg, one of the first importers of Belgian beer to America and founder of the first Belgian-only brewery in the U.S. Don chooses his Lambics for their complexity, brilliance and drinking excellence both by themselves and as exquisite accompaniments to food.

Ecliptic Come Calala Passion Fruit Imperial Wit: traditional witbier base and added passion fruit (also known as a Calala) and orange peel for a juicy finish.

pFriem Peche Lambic-Style: heirloom peaches added to year-old lambic aged in foeders.

Firestone Walker Opal Saison:blend of rustic grains, spicy yeast and unique sauvignon blanc tones. Inviting lemon grass and gooseberry meet peppery spice and fresh grain aromas. Bright tropical white wine finish.

Little Beast Bes Tart Wheat Ale: flavored with chamomile, Belgian malts and noble hops this farmhouse wild ale is fermented with a blend of unique Saccharomyces yeast and conditioned with Lactobacillus. It’s a yeast forward flavor profile with some of the banana, clove you might find in more Bavarian beers but with a funkier, earthier bite and notes of pineapple, lemon and coconut.

Vicaris Tripel Gueuze: mix of Vicaris Tripel and Boon lambic. Creamy white head billows above a honey-gold-colored beer. The nose has notes of tart vanilla and spice while a full body and long finish are perfectly balanced by the fine, dry gueuze.

Victory Kirsch Gose: sour cherry German style pours a ruby to light red with white foam. Aroma of fresh sour cherries with flavors of tartness, intense rounded cherry character, and a refreshing salty character. Crisp carbonation and light body are both combined into a thirst quencher.

Heater Allen 10th Anniversary
Noon-5 p.m. Saturday, May 27, Heater Allen Taproom, 907 NE 10th Ave., McMinnville:
The OLCC gave Heater Allen its liquor license March 31, 2007 and, given the lagering time of eight weeks, the first beers were ready to drink just in time for Memorial Day weekend of that year, so they’ve decided to celebrate the first decade this Saturday with the release of Das Bier in their new 500ml bottles and the release of a special anniversary Zwickelbier. There’ll be a limited supply of special half liter steins, food and lots of beer. German attire is not required but encouraged…

City of Goses
1-9 p.m. Saturday May 27 & Sunday May 28, LABrewatory, 670 N. Russell St.; $20, all ages, 21 & over to sample.
This new fest bills itself as “the largest and possibly first celebration strictly dedicated to gose-style beers.” Fair enough: goses — wheat ales brewed with salt, coriander, and tart lactic acid — are a relatively recent addition to the American craft beer scene, a revival of an old German style. City of Goses, which is also the Portland Rose Festival’s first sanctioned beer fest will feature 30 goses from traditional takes on this salty, sour beer to variations from Portland and beyond. LABrewatory will have its house beers on tap also.

Widmer Brothers 100 Days of Hefe Kickoff Party
4 p.m. Sunday May 28, Horse Brass Pub, 4537 SE Belmont St.;
This is the fourth year of 100 Days of Hefe, when the brewery hosts 100 local events in the Portland area from Memorial Day to Labor Day. 100 Days of Hefe celebrates the brewery’s flagship beer, Hefe, and gives fans multiple opportunities to meet members of the brewing team and brewery co-founder Rob Widmer, and opportunities to win prizes like custom Hefe bikes, Hefe BBQ grills, and Hefe golf bags throughout the summer. Widmer Brothers’ Original American Hefe will be prominently featured during the 100 Days of Hefe, as will the brewery’s new Hefe variations, including the beer launched today, Hefe Berry Lime, a playful take on Hefe, brewed with a blend of Oregon marionberries, blackberries, lime, and kaffir lime leaves. The result is a tart and refreshing, wheat beer that is perfect for the warmer summer months ahead.
