Firestone Walker Celebrates 9 Years of Brewing in Los Angeles at The Propagator
After becoming the defining brewery of the 805 area code of California, Firestone Walker Brewing Co. decided it was time to take over the area just south of this region and open an outpost in the mega city of Los Angeles. For nearly twenty years, Firestone Walker rose through the ranks to be the definitive brewer of California’s Central Coast. It then set its sights on one of the largest metropolitan areas of the U.S. to open a brewpub on the city’s westside in Marina Del Rey, adjacent to the trendy Venice area.
Now with nine years under its belt, The Propagator will celebrate its 9th Anniversary Block Party later this month from Saturday, April 26 through Sunday, April 27. In addition to the celebration of beer, music, culture, and the Venice community, The Propagator that is Firestone Walker’s R&D Brewhouse, the brewery will release Gen 9 West Coast Double IPA.
The Propagator opened in 2016 as Firestone Walker’s hub for innovation. This fast-moving R&D brewhouse that feeds the creative engine behind many of the brewery’s most unique and progressive beers is led by Sam Tierney. It has become a cultural touchstone for Firestone Walker in Southern California, nestled in the heart of Venice area and inspired by the neighborhood’s unmistakable spirit.
“Venice has always had that pulse — a mix of creators, artisans, eccentrics, surfers, and locals who bring energy and soul to everything they do,” said Nick Firestone, CEO of Firestone Walker. “We saw that early on and knew it was the right place for us to be. The Propagator reflects that spirit — it’s our creative playground in LA.”

Crafted in celebration of nine years of experimentation and innovation, Gen 9 IPA is a modern West Coast Double IPA featuring the new HQG 4 experimental hop created in partnership with Hop Quality Group. It explodes with guava and blueberry aromatics, layered over dank tropical notes. Juicy yet balanced, bold yet refined — Gen 9 clocks in at 8.9% ABV and represents the culmination of nearly a decade of exploration at the Propagator.

The Propagator Anniversary Block Party – April 26–27

We made a visit to The Propagator in late 2017. It’s a short trip from LAX so it’s a must stop when flying in or out of Los Angeles’s largest airport. With over thirty Firestone Walker brewed beers, including plenty of barrel aged delights on tap and an accompanying food menu, The Propagator is always a pleasure to visit!
