The rise in cold brewed coffee continues to grow as many new brands continue to enter the marketplace. One of these coffee roasters that have joined the ranks for offering Cold Brew is Anchorhead Coffee, a specialty roasting and brewing company located in Duvall, Washington, just east of Seattle.

Founded in 2013 by Jake Paulson and Mike Steiner, Anchorhead Coffee has been roasting a combination of fair trade, organic, and non-GMO beans from the around the world. This roasting has also led the company into cold brewing its Anchorhead Coffee Original Cold Brew that is brewed with its Narwhal beans.

Now the roaster is introducing its new Anchorhead Coffee Hopped Cold Brew that uses fresh Citra hops to flavor its premium slow-brewed coffee. With the roaster’s Narwhal beans used as the base, the unsweetened beverage is then steeped with Citra hops. This process makes for a dryer finish with prominent citrus flavors on the back of the mouthfeel. The hop presence is definitely there but not in an overpowering way. This is definitely a cold brew designed for the craft beer drinker in mind and one to seek out.

The process of cold brewing is a long undertaking of brewing coffee at room temperature for approximately 20 hours. This is similar to what many brewers do in producing a coffee beer. From implementing this cold brew process the acidity in the coffee dissipates to deliver a more approachable flavor that brings forward more fruity and floral flavors.

“Brewing just outside of Seattle, the combination of coffee and beer was a natural one to play around with – and, being a small operation, we like to experiment in the warehouse,” said Mike Steiner, co-founder of Anchorhead Coffee. “We focus on sourcing the freshest beans and pulling the best flavors out of them, whether that’s during the roasting process or by pairing the brew with other natural flavors, like Citra hops.”

“As much as I love coffee, a hot latte or cup of drip doesn’t always sound good in the summer, so we knew it was important to get it on shelves this season,” said Jake Paulson, the other half of Anchorhead Coffee’s founding team. “But, this isn’t a limited-edition or seasonal product. Both the Hopped and Original Cold Brew are amazing with egg nog, coffee liqueurs and other fall or winter drinks, so we are looking forward to showing people the versatility of cold brew coffee.” Looks as if we may need to get creative here.

Anchorhead Coffee packages both ready-to-drink cold brews in 12 oz. glass bottles that sell for a suggested retail of $3.99 each. The bottles are easy to spot as the caps have the U.S. flag printed on them. Anchorhead Coffee is sold at select West Coast retailers and online at www.anchorheadcoffee.com. In Portland it can be found at select Whole Foods locations including Fremont, Hollywood, Greenway, and Bridgeport.
