As we approach the second half of February, or as we call it in Portland, spring, a big red heart denotes that the 14th is Valentine’s Day, a day for lovers and all things red. With that in mind, I opted for a chance to sample my first Van Diest Früli Strawberry Beer.

Being one of those people who believe that beer should taste like beer, I admit I was skeptical. But one taste quickly converted me. This delightfully sweet and refreshing beverage awoke a giddy cheerfulness on my pallet making me want more.

So, if you love Valentine’s Day, good beer, or the delicious flavor of wild strawberries, take the opportunity to try this delightful offering from Brouwerij Huyghe in Melle, East Flanders, Belgium. This light 4.1% ABV beer is a result of a blend of 70% white beer and 30% fruit juice. The finish holds a mild vanilla-like aftertaste that is balanced by the faint sourness of the Belgian witbier base.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all!
