33 Beers: Over 5,000 Copies Sold

By now you’ve likely come across the handy little pocket logs known as  “33 Beers.”  The pocket-sized companion and memory aid is available at most places around Beervana where craft beer is the focus. Brewpublic featured this great little note-keeper last winter when BS Brewing‘s Dave Selden introduced the product to the public in time for the holidays.  Since 33 Beers release back in the late fall of 2009, Selden has sold more than 5,000 of his 100% recycled papers sourced in the Pacific Northwest. Interior pages are 100% post-consumer recycled content and covers are 85% post-consumer recycled content and 15% recycled content. The booklets are printed using US-grown soy-based inks in Portland, Oregon. More reason to love them.

As an accompaniment, Selden, starting on January 1, 2010, began a one-a-day review on line, on quest to review 999 brews in 999 days. Currently he is at a gross (that’s 144, dude), and looks to complete the journey on September 26, 2012.

33 Beers is now available at 30 retail stores in 13 U.S. states, and Selden says “I’m hoping to add a few more within the next few weeks.” So far, he’s personally reviewed beers ranging from Pliny the Younger and West Vleteren 8 to Bud Light Wheat. In addition to Selden’s successful beer journals, in April, he debuted “33 Wines“, a sibling to 33 Beers designed for taking wine-tasting notes. Says Selden: “It follows the familiar, checkbox and flavor wheel format, but adds a new device I call a “color meter” that lets tasters record wine’s color from “brown” at one end to “clear” on the other, with stops at “purple” and “gold” along the way.” Interestingly, Selden says some Cabernet Sauvignon was added to the reddish ink used on the cover of the books. However, he doesn’t encourage licking at them.

With beer festival season and father’s day around the corner, and hopefully some warmer, less rainy drinking weather, Selden is optimistic of the growing success of his ventures. He humbly adds, “It’s still a labor of love for me, but who knows what the future holds?!”
