Have you ever wanted to learn more about the science that goes into beer? Well OMSI has you covered at their upcoming 4th Annual OMSI After Dark: Brewfest taking place on Wednesday, September 24th from 6:00 to 10:00pm.

OMSI After Dark: Brewfest is where one can come to not just drink the beer but to learn about the makings of this great, tasty beverage. Brewing is the result of science and at the 4th annual brewfest you will be able to sample beers from local breweries while learning how beer is made, why yeast is important and how to grow hops.

OMSI After DarkAnd if you get out of work early, OMSI After Dark will host their happy hour at its new eatery, Theory, beginning at 5:00pm. Get a jump start on the fun with happy hour in Theory, a re-imagined museum eatery that reinvents the dining experience. Enjoy food and drink specials for one hour prior to OMSI After Dark.

If you arrive to OMSI a bit hungry or just need something to help with the beers you’ll be sampling, Theory will be open until 9:30pm. Theory is the place to come check out the delicious menu featuring pizza, salad, fries and more!

One of the highlights of OMSI After Dark are the lectures that are held in the Planetarium. For the Brewfest there will be two lectures taking place.

  • Hopped Up
    Blake Crosby of Crosby Hop Farm discusses the different types of hops and how to grow them.
  • Tap Into History: The Story of Hops & Brewing at OSU
    Oregon’s craft brewing industry has kept people busy for the past 3 decades, but it wasn’t until the Oregon Hops & Brewing Archives was established in 2013 that an archivist joined the work. This presentation will tell the story of how OHBA worked with communities to save and share an amazing history of agriculture, science, and culture in the midst of a movement.

Demonstrations & Activities

  • Beer Pong Physics – Catapults and video analysis of pongs in motion.
  • Microbrew Under the Microscope – Hops, grains and yeast…magnified!
  • Beer’s Law of Beers – Know a pilsner from a heffeweizen? Prove it. With science.
  • Bubble Shower – Life would be so flat without CO2
  • Stupid Beer Tricks – Stupid beer tricks including ultrasonic beer geyser, flash freezing beer and beer can crushing.

The cost to attend OMSI After Dark: Brewfest is $25 Non-Members, $15 Members, and $5 OAD Members. If only want to attend OMSI After Dark the entrance fee is $13 Non-Members, $6.50 Members, and free for OAD Members. One must be 21 years of age or older to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance here.
