#PDXNOW Presents Base Camp's Collabofest

Base Camp Collabofest

On Saturday, January 24th, Base Camp Brewing will host the first ever #PDXNOW Presents Base Camp’s Collabofest, from Noon to 8:00pm. This one of a kind beerfest is held in conjunction with Travel Portland as part of the organization’s larger Portland is Happening Now winter tourism campaign.

Base Camp Brewing pulled together ten of Portland’s breweries to pair up to create ten different #PDXNOW brews. The ten breweries include Base Camp, Baerlic, Breakside, Coalition, Ecliptic, Ex Novo, Fat Head’s, Gigantic, Hopworks and Stormbreaker. Each pair shares a particular beer style, but individual breweries have crafted their own interpretations, utilizing local ingredients to showcase the brewing talents found around the clock in Portland.

PDXNow TaphandleThe #PDXNOW beers will be available at the breweries’ respective taprooms beginning on January 24th and lasting through February 28th. Also available, while supplies last, will be the #PDXNOW “Beerport” passport with tasting notes on each of the beers.

“Portland is the ultimate destination for beer lovers. With more craft breweries than any other city on the planet, Portland is the craft brewing capital of the world,” said Courtney Ries, Travel Portland marketing director. “This limited-availability series showcases a variety of breweries in town, and we hope this encourages beer lovers to visit Portland before they miss this exclusive collection.”

“This initiative typifies the collaborative spirit Portland is known for,” said Ross Putnam, co-founder of Base Camp Brewing Company. “Portland has an amazing craft beer scene that has made this city home to some of the best beers in the world. We’ve very much enjoyed working with this group of exceptional breweries to create a #PDXNOW collection that both tourists and locals are sure to love.”

The main event will take place beginning with a VIP entry at Noon on Saturday. General Admission entry begins an hour later at 1:00pm. Once inside one will be able to meet the brewers and sample all 10 limited-edition beers in one location at the kickoff event. The family-friendly Collabofest celebration will be held at Base Camp Brewing Company and will cover two city blocks, featuring iconic food trucks Koi Fusion, Gonzo and Grilled Cheese Grill.

Base Camp Brewing Collabofest

The descriptions for the ten Collabofest Beers are listed below.

Bridge Builder Bock
Base Camp Brewing Co. in collaboration with Coalition Brewing Co.
This bockbier (an amber German beer) is brewed “as local as possible” with domestic and Northwest malts, Oregon hops and Oregon pear wood for aging. The decoction mash features Northwest high-color Pale Malt, Vienna, Munich and Melanoidin malts for big malt flavor, smoothed out with extensive lagering and completed with house-chipped and -roasted pear wood. The resulting beer is warming enough to ward off winter chill, mellow enough to have several pints, complex, smooth and stylish.

Mutual Fermentation
Coalition Brewing Co. in collaboration with Base Camp Brewing Co.
This true collaboration beer is a malty amber ale and the counterpart to Base Camp’s lager version, with malt and fruit dominating the nose (from the locally sourced base malt from Great Western mixed with dark Munich and an array of caramel malts) while a light hop character (from locally grown Sterling and Perle hops) helps balance the caramel sweetness. Pear wood from a local farmer roasted at a collaborator’s house adds a light tannic character to give this ale a clean finish.

Gose Either Way
Ex Novo Brewing Co. in collaboration with Gigantic Brewing Co.
A blackberry gose that is crisp, tart and refreshing, made with Oregon blackberries, Jacobsen sea salt and coriander. It also blends well with Gigantic’s Quadtastic.

Quadtastic B2 + G + EX = #PDXNOW
Gigantic Brewing Co. in collaboration with Ex Novo Brewing Co.
Dark fruit, toffee, caramel and rich malt abound in this ruby-colored brew, made to blend with Ex Novo’s gose.

Downkriek Cosmic Storm Belgian Sour
Ecliptic Brewing in collaboration with Stormbreaker Brewing
This Belgian saison has a bright cherry flavor, light body and tart finish. It was brewed with Washington barley malt, Oregon cherries, Oregon hops and kettle-soured with Oregon yogurt.

Upkriek Cosmic Storm
Stormbreaker Brewing in collaboration with Ecliptic Brewing
This light Belgian blonde has aromas of cherries and slight breadiness. It gives you a little sweetness up front with a clean, crisp, smooth mouthfeel and was aged on tart cherries for a dry, tart, cherry finish.

Juggling Plums Gose
Breakside Brewing Co. in collaboration with Fat Head’s Brewing
This gose is a slightly sour wheat beer made with salt — derived from the Japanese salt plum, or umeboshi — and coriander. It’s a “gateway sour” with a moderate body and slightly spicy finish that had components brewed and each of the breweries.

Weiss Weiss Baby
Fat Head’s Brewing in collaboration with Breakside Brewing Co.
This red German weizen has a soft amber color and a caramel sweetness that comes from Crystal malts. It’s nicely accentuated by the expressive German hefeweizen yeast strain that adds banana and clove flavors, and all brought together by smokiness from beechwood-smoked malts.

Hop-lic Kellerweizen
Hopworks Urban Brewery in collaboration with Baerlic Brewing Co.
This Bavarian hefeweizen was dry-hopped with organic El Dorado and Citra hops before being finished in apple- and pear-brandy barrels.

Baer-works Radlerweizen
Baerlic Brewing Co. in collaboration with Hopworks Urban Brewery
Organic Oregon pear juice was added to this Bavarian hefeweizen to give it the light, fruity taste of a radler, a German shandy.

Base Camp Winter Rail Jam
