Oregon Breweries Earn 22 Medals at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival
This past Friday evening the 2020 Great American Beer Festival hosted its Awards Ceremony in a totally different format. With the in-person portion of the Great American Beer Festival canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the awards ceremony went virtual via a web broadcast from The Brewing Network.
The Brewers Association (BA) awarded 272 medals to 240 breweries across the country during the 2020 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition awards ceremony. Judges for the 34th edition of the celebrated competition evaluated 8,806 entries from 1,720 breweries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. Socially distanced judging took place in 35 sessions over 18 days with strict safety measures in place.
“This year’s GABF competition may have looked a little different, but the beers entered into the competition were as impressive and innovative as ever,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival, in a statement. “This has arguably been one of the most challenging years breweries have ever faced, so we hope these awards serve as a symbol not only of brewing excellence but also the resiliency of the craft brewing community as a whole.”
Breweries here in the Pacific Northwest fared very well. Oregon breweries earned 22 Medals at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival while Washington breweries earned 16 medals. In all, a pretty successful showing for our region.
The region also fared well as it relates to brewery awards. Three Creeks Brewing from Sisters, OR took home the Brewery Group and Brewery Group Brewer of the Year Award and nearby Monkless Belgian Ales from Bend, OR took home the Mid-Size Brewpub and Mid-Size Brewpub Brewer of the Year. In Washington State, The Good Society from Seattle took home the Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year.
Oregon breweries swept the Specialty Saison category that had 74 entries. Alesong Brewing & Blending was awarded the Gold Medal for its Farmhouse Cuvée, ColdFire Brewing was awarded Silver while Von Ebert Brewing brought home the Bronze. Alesong Brewing was also awarded a Silver Medal for its Touch of Brett in the Brett Beer category.
“Due to the virtual-only aspect to this year’s event, we were thrilled to watch the awards with more of our team at the brewery,” said Matt Van Wyk, co-founder of Alesong Brewing & Blending. ““We are thrilled to get back in the win column for touch of Brett after a hiatus last year. Four medals in five years for that beer is amazing and it doesn’t seem to happen that much these days. It was great to celebrate with so many of our crew that make things happen at Alesong.”

The most entered beer category was Category 58: Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale with 377 entries. This was followed by Category 57: American Style India Pale Ale (355 entries); Category 39: German Style Pilsener (200 entries); Category 28: Wood & Barrel-Aged Strong Stout (199 entries); and Category 60: Juicy or Hazy Imperial India Pale Ale (192 entries).
The breweries that earned the most 2020 GABF Medals Sun King Brewery – Indianapolis, IN with 4 Medals; both Cannonball Creek Brewing – Golden, CO, Chuckanut Brewery – Bellingham,WA, and Riip Beer Co. – Huntington Beach, CA all with 3 Medals each. Then 23 individual breweries were awarded 2 medals each and 213 individual breweries won 1 medal.
