Oregon Breweries Win 33 Medals & 3 Brewery of the Year Awards at the 2024 Great American Beer Festival

Celebrating its 42nd year, the 2024 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) announced its 2024 medal winners earlier today and the Pacific Northwest fared quite well. Oregon breweries took home a total of 33 medals while breweries in Washington state were awarded 26 medals. Then to top it all off, three Oregon breweries were awarded Brewery of the Year, based on size.

But this is not all of the local winners as for the very first time, for better or worse, the GABF added cider to the competition mix with five cider categories. Oregon cidermakers were awarded five medals and the Cidermaker of the Year Award. And one Washington cidermaker was awarded.

This year marked the 38th edition of the GABF competition. It saw 1,869 breweries and cideries out of the nearly 10,000 from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico pay to enter the most respected beer competition in the United States. Over the course of seven days, 285 judges evaluated 8,836 beers and awarded a total of 326 medals to 273 breweries and cideries. The GABF judge panel evaluated noteworthy brews and ciders across 102 beer categories, five new cider categories, and the Pro-Am and Collaboration competitions.

The awards ceremony was held at the Bellco Theatre in Denver on Saturday, October 12, 2024. It kicked off at 9:00am (Pacific) with opening remarks from Chris Williams. He honored Nancy Johnson, Senior VP of Meetings and Events, as she retires from the Brewers Association. Lacey Gautier has taken over for Nancy at the BA as the trade group’s new VP of Meetings and Events. Then for nearly two hours as Williams announced the winners, Bob Pease, outgoing President & CEO of the Brewers Association, handed out the awards to the winning breweries and cideries that were in attendance.

Speaking of attendance, the crowd that gathered at this year’s awards ceremony was sparse. In years past this theater would be completely filled. It shows that fewer breweries are traveling to Denver for the GABF, deciding to control their expenses a bit more to manager their way through these challenging economic times.

“The Great American Beer Festival continues its commitment to recognizing exceptional beverages from across the country in the 2024 competition,” said Chris Williams, competition director for the Brewers Association. “With the addition of five new cider categories, we’re pleased to recognize the best of the best in beer and beyond. Congratulations to this year’s winners!”

Regionally, the Pacific Northwest did quite well. Oregon breweries were awarded a total of 33 medals. Of these, there were 13 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals, and 10 Bronze Medals. Then there were three Oregon breweries that received the coveted Brewery of the Year award. This list of breweries included Sunriver Brewing (5,001-15,00 Barrels), Grand Fir Brewing (501-1,000 Barrels) and Alesong Brewing & Blending (250-500 Barrels).

Washington breweries were awarded a total of 26 medals. Of these, there were 7 Gold Medals, 8 Silver Medals, and 11 Bronze Medals.

Breaking down these numbers a bit further saw 10 Barrel Brewing took home a total of six medals, four from its Bend operations and two from its Portland Pub. Both Sunriver Brewing and Grand Fir Brewing took home three medals each. Joining in this three medal win was Deschutes Brewery, two from its Portland Pub and one from its Bend Production facility and Breakside Brewery, a medal each from three different locations. Rounding out the Oregon multiple winning breweries with two medals each is Alesong Brewing & Blending, ColdFire Brewing Co. – Barrel House, Oregon City Brewing Co.

In Washington state three breweries were awarded multiple medals at two each. This includes Victor-23 Craft Brewery, Structures Brewing, Project 9 Brewing Co and Grains of Wrath, one each from its two locations.

Then add in the new cider awards, something that we can see as a new revenue stream for the BA, had a solid showing from the Pacific Northwest. 2 Towns Ciderhouse took home three Bronze Medals and one Silver Medal while McMenamins took home one Gold Medal and Alpenfire Cider was awarded a Bronze Medal. Then to top it all off, 2 Towns Ciderhouse was awarded the inaugural 2024 GABF Cidermaker of the Year.

Looking at the competition from a broader perspective, of the 1,869 breweries and cideries 280 were first time GABF entrants. Winning medals for the first time were 25 different breweries, one of these was Terrranaut Beer from Bend, Oregon with a Silver Medal. This brewery led by Bryon Pika, just began brewing a few months ago and opened its taproom just one week ago.

The category with the highest number of entries was Juicy/Hazy IPA with a massive 349 entries and Yakima, Washington’s Single Hill Brewing was awarded the Silver Medal! It was followed by West Coast IPA with 292 entries, American-Style IPA with 217 entries and Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest with 210 entries.
