Gigantic Brewing Makes the Change to Cans in 2024
|Earlier this month, Gigantic Brewing began rolling out its beer in convenient 4-pack, 16-ounce cans. Since its inception in 2012, the brewery has exclusively bottled its offerings, first in 22-ounce bottles and most recently 16.9-ounce refillable bottles.
Now this package format is all changing as Gigantic Brewing will now package its array of IPAs and other one-offs in the popular 16-ounce can format. The craft beer world has changed over the past decade and Gigantic is following where the sales are growing with this packaging change. This past year, according to Bump Williams Consulting, craft cans increased its dollar sales by 5.2% that equates to over $4B in off-premise sales.
“You asked and we heard, Gigantic Brewing is excited to announce that we are now in cans!”, said Ben Love, Co-founder and Brewmaster of Gigantic Brewing. “Canning our beers allows us to reach more people who love great beer.”
Moving forward, the majority of Gigantic beers will be exclusively available in 16oz cans, while barrel-aged varieties will continue to be packaged in bottles.
The initial canned lineup includes:
- Gigantic IPA: True to its name. A citrusy hop confluence that continuously embiggens with each drink.
- Kölschtastic: Refreshing and easy-drinking, a subtle balance of pilsner malt and Mt Hood hops.
- Life or Death IPA: A seasonal collaboration with Wayfinder Beer that has a big citrus orange, tropical, and dank aroma, that finishes dry and refreshing.
Over the next five weeks, Gigantic will unveil a new canned beer offering each week! From brewery favorite Sassy Pony Pale, to new year-round offering Gigantic Pilsner, to seasonal releases Spirit Bomb IPA, Goblin Mode Hazy IPA, Mill Ends Red, and Tierra del Lager, these canned offerings will join Gigantic Brewing’s existing lineup of draft and barrel-aged bottled beers, ensuring that beer lovers have even more ways to experience the brewery’s craftsmanship and creativity.
Since the brewery’s launch in 2012, it has been known for its unique and colorful label art that features artists both from Oregon and around the world. In switching to cans they chose to partner with Craft Canning, a Portland-based company specializing in printed cans. These printed cans not only boast an impressive aesthetic appeal with a myriad of color options, metallics, matte finishes, and textures, but they are also entirely recyclable – aligning with Gigantic’s commitment to sustainability. Cans that use sticker labels are only able to be recycled if the sticker is completely removed, something in a state with a 10 cent deposit is not likely happening all too often.
Gigantic Brewing’s new canned beers will be available for purchase at grocers, beer shops, bars and bodegas throughout Oregon, as well as at the brewery’s three taproom locations: The Brewery Taproom (5224 SE 26th Ave), Hawthorne Pub (4343 SE Hawthorne), and Robot Room (6935 NE Glisan St).
The new cans will also make their debut this week on Friday, February 2, 2024 from 4:00 – 7:00pm at Belmont Station. For this special release event, Gigantic will be joined by Wayfinder Beer for the launch of Life or Death IPA. The teams from both breweries will be at The Station as beers from both breweries will be on draft.
Then throughout the month of February, all three John’s Marketplace locations are featuring Gigantic Brewing’s new canned beers. Stop in to your local John’s for weekly can releases.
