Whiskey Wednesday – Black Yeti Grisly’s Cosmic Black Bourbon & Cola
|One beverage segment that continues to experience expansion is ready to drink canned cocktails. The latest to enter this competitive market segment is Black Yeti Beverage with its Grisly’s Cosmic Black Bourbon & Cola.
Launching with a bourbon and cola mixed cocktail, Grisly’s Cosmic Black is the first of three flavors from Black Yeti that will be released in the coming year. Though it has only been on the scene since this past summer, Grisly’s Cosmic Black has already received gold medals in Wine Country Network’s Canned Challenge in both the taste and packaging and design categories.
Black Yeti Beverage was co-founded by Samantha Franklin and Eric Trueheart. Franklin is a former Billboard-charting rock star best known for her work in her band The Holograms, while her partner, Trueheart is a former writer on the cult-classic animated series Invader Zim. The couple’s love of classic rock-n-roll poster art is evident in the colorful package design, featuring the brand’s mascot, Cosmic Eddie, The Space Yeti.
“Hard seltzers may be having a moment, but we’re offering no-added-sugar alternative that offers a full, award-winning flavor experience,” said Franklin, in a statement. “We think the world is ready for the Yeti!”
Canned by Surf City Still Works, Grisly’s Cosmic Black is created from two-year old high-rye bourbon and premium craft cola with zero added sugar. Each 12oz can sits at 6% ABV, 120 calories and 1g of carbs. The result is an aged bourbon that’s blended with premium cola.
Grisly’s Cosmic Black is a nice take on the classic whiskey and coke. This one does go a bit more high-end as the cola used is quite exceptional. The blended bourbon and cola if full of aroma and flavor as it offers the sweetness of cola on the nose that’s followed by a faint aroma of whiskey. When it comes to the flavors, they’re reminiscent of baking spices that includes cinnamon and nutmeg.
Grisly’s Cosmic Black is available in Southern California, including the chain of Raley’s, and is also available to purchase online via Royal Batch at $15.99 per 4-pack. Black Yeti plans to follow the release of Cosmic Black with Cosmic Bliss, a clear cola with a lighter flavor profile, in Spring 2022, followed by Cosmic Blood, a blood-orange-based bourbon and cola in Summer 2022.
