Beermuda – the Perfect Get-Away

After surviving months of cold and dreary weather and nearly 100 inches of snow in Massachusetts, a much-needed escape was necessary. And where better to go than the small British island of Bermuda, a short three-hour flight from Boston. Relaxation and warm weather greeted us along with great local foods and beverages. The island is best known for its rum concoctions, including the Swizzle and the Stormy Night, but being a real beer lover, I sought out the local brews.
First stop, The Swizzle Inn and a chance to sample a local favorite, Oscar’s Amber Ale. The light flavor was perfect for the cool afternoon, going down easily as we enjoyed local music and terrific pub food. Such a great experience required several re-visits during our stay.
The next day a bus trip and ferry ride brought us to the Royal Naval Dockyard, a beautiful and historic part of the island, featuring boat yards, sandy beaches and home of Dockyard Brewing (producers of the aforementioned Oscar’s Amber Ale). Here one can choose from Whale of a Wheat, St. David’s Light (lager), Somer’s Amber Ale, Black Anchor Porter or Trunk Island Pale Ale. The pub serving Dockyard’s brews is The Frog & Onion Pub. This unique Pub is housed in the mid-18th Century Cooperage with friendly waiters and a true British pub atmosphere. Our selections included the bitter St. David’s Light and a citrusy Whale of a Wheat. Neither disappointed.
It’s easy to see why many return annually to this beautiful island where delicious local food and brews are more than welcoming in the middle of a shivery New England winter.
