Guinness Celebrates 200 Years In The U.S. With 200th Anniversary Export Stout
The world’s most iconic stout is set to celebrate 200 years of being exported to the United States from Dublin, Ireland. Back on October 16, 1817, Guinness landed on the shores in South Carolina of the United States for the very first time.
Arthur Guinness’ grandson, Benjamin Guinness, brewed this beer that now has been recreated to honor its 200-year milestone. Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout at 6% ABV is noticeably different from its current day predecessor, Guinness Draught at 4.2% ABV.
To create Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout the brewers from Guinness reached out to the Guinness Archivist, Eibhlin Colgan. It is here in the archives where Eibhlin researched the brewer’s log books to find this export date and the beer’s recipe. She also discovered that the brewers used a new roasted grain at the time, black patent malt. This malt is a precursor to today’s roasted barley that is used to brew Guinness Draught.
What this black patent malt brings forth to the beer is much more noticeable deep, dark, full-bodied stout. Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout offers more prominent roastiness along with hints of chocolate and coffee.
Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout Tasting Notes:
Aroma: Toffee and caramel with slight chocolate notes
Flavor: Complex but smooth with a sweet chocolate flavor
Palate: Smooth and mellow with a dry finish
ABV: 6.0%
Appearance: Dark ruby red with a frothy head
Hops: Goldings
According to the Guinness “Where To Buy” Beer Locator, Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout is currently not available in the Pacific Northwest just quite yet. Hopefully it’ll arrive by this coming Monday so we call can celebrate 200 years of Guinness on our shores.
Also about to hit the marketplace are cans of Guinness Draught that feature a vintage advertisement from the 1950s of the Guinness Toucans flying over Mount Rushmore.
