The news that Ex Novo Brewing was in the process of selling its two Oregon locations to a local group was made public a few months ago. Now the new group of local investors have announced that the Lazy Days Brewing has fully acquired Ex Novo Brewing’s two Oregon locations, one in Portland and the other in Beaverton. Ex Novo Brewing will continue its operations in the state of New Mexico.

Earlier this year when Ex Novo Brewing’s owner Joel Gregory put the Oregon portion of his business for sale, he closed down the kitchen at its flagship location in Portland. The Beaverton pizza spot pretty much stayed business as usual.

Come Wednesday, December 20th, Lazy Days Brewing flagship location will re-open its kitchen and release, Turning Point Lager, its collaboration beer brewed with Ex Novo Brewing. At this time, the kitchen will get back up and running with a limited menu until the full transition is completed in the next few weeks. Then a full food menu is arriving at the beginning of the year. It’ll make for a great stop once again when heading to a Blazers or Winterhawks game!

Lazy Days Brewing is led by co-founders Ryan Still and Jake Elder. There are also a few other investors that according to Andre Meunier of The Oregonian are Kyle Boylan and Doug Kutella. Ryan will oversee the operation of the pubs while Jake will oversee the brewing operations.

Joining Elder on the brewing side are two Co-Head Brewers – Zane Singleton and Joe Smith. Jake previously brewed at Pelican Brewing Company and worked at E&J Gallo as a research winemaker before settling into a 9+ year stint as a product and process developer for Pacific Foods and Wild Rose Foods. Zane’s experience includes Trap Door Brewing and Dwinell Country Ales while Joe’s includes Migration Brewing and Southern Pacific Brewing.

Lazy Days Brewing aspires to be the go-to neighborhood brewpub. Its mission is simple: create a warm, welcoming space where friends and neighbors can come together to savor excellent beer, delicious Detroit-style pizza, and hearty pub fare. Beyond crafting approachable beers and mouthwatering dishes, the brewery is dedicated to community-building through special events, empowering its employees, and supporting local initiatives.

The brewery will continue to support local causes as Ex Novo Brewing did but from a different angle. One that will be a more sustaining business proposition.

“Community is a large aspect of our ethos, however, an Oregon Benefit Company will not be our official business entity type,” wrote Ryan Still in an email to BREWPUBLIC. “We will work to ensure our surrounding communities feel supported and connected to us as a brand. Stay tuned for community involvement and philanthropic efforts!”

In the coming weeks, the two locations will feature vibrant new signage at both locations. This signage and marketing will reflect Lazy Days’ friendly and fun-loving spirit. It will also be introducing its signature lineup of beers. The Portland kitchen reopens with a limited menu, expanding to a full rollout, including cocktails, in January 2024. In Beaverton, business continues as usual with a Lazy Days signage makeover and the exciting addition of weekend brunch in the new year.

“We are so excited that this is coming together like it has been,” says Ryan Still. “The sense of community with our staff and Ex Novo regulars is already happening so organically. It’s really a dream coming to life in real time. We appreciate Ex Novo’s contributions to these neighborhoods and the continued support from some amazing customers – and look forward to continuing their legacy.”

Amidst the changes, Lazy Days remains committed to serving, and even brewing, Ex Novo’s exceptional beers. Through a contract brewing agreement, Lazy Days will continue producing several Ex Novo Beers, ensuring their availability in the Oregon market.

“We’re excited to continue a presence in the NW market through contract brewing, maintaining the same recipes, quality control, and brew system we’ve been using all along,” adds Ex Novo Owner and Founder, Joel Gregory. “I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished in Oregon in the past 9+ years – it was a great run, and it took a lot of grit from the team to keep it operational until we could pass the torch to Lazy Days. They will bring these beautiful spaces back to what they’re capable of. We wish tons of success to the Lazy Days team and look forward to seeing what they bring to the Oregon brewing scene.”

Currently, Lazy Days Brewing hours in Portland will be Monday – Thursday from 4:00-9:00pm, Friday from 2:00-9:00pm and Saturday – Sunday from Noon-8:00pm. While in Beaverton its hours will be Monday – Tuesday from 3:00-9:00pm and Wednesday – Saturday from Noon-9:00pm.
