Russian River Brewing Co. to Bottle Pliny the Younger in 2020
|For the first time in the beer’s 16-year history, Russian River Brewing Co. will bottle its highly coveted Pliny the Younger. The annual release of this very popular Triple IPA will take place from February 7-20, 2020 at both Russian River Brewing’s locations in Northern California in Santa Rosa and Windsor.
Pliny the Younger is a sought after whale for beer aficionados. On the beer review website, BeerAdvocate, Pliny the Younger has a score of 100 that makes this beer a World-Class offering. Those of us here in Portland and for others on the West Coast, we are a bit spoiled as we have a few opportunities each year to try this beer on draft. Not that Pliny the Younger is widely available, just that those in the know are aware on where to locate its limited draft offering in late February and early March.
But for the thousands that trek to Santa Rosa and Windsor this coming February, they will have an opportunity to purchase Pliny the Younger for $10 each in 510mL bottles for the very first time. Keep in mind that many beercationers come to this area during this two-week period. Last year the Sonoma County Economic Development Board conducted an economic study during the draft only Pliny the Younger release and determined that visitors from 42 states and 14 countries and contributed $4.16M to the local economy. Pretty amazing stats there.
Bottles of Pliny the Younger will only be sold at each Russian River Brewing Co. location for guests that come to one of the pubs for a full-on Pliny experience that allows for three 10oz glasses and two to-go bottles of Pliny. No Pliny bottles will make their way into distribution or will be sold at either of the brewery’s gift shops. Pliny the Younger will be available in the brewery’s distribution in draft that begins the second week of February.
Pliny the Younger Brewery Description:
Pliny the Younger is considered a “triple” IPA, simply meaning that it is higher in alcohol and has tons of hops. The alcohol should finish at about 10.25%, although it is remarkably dry for the amount of malt used in the recipe. It is loaded with hop flavors, bitterness, and aromatics. We brewed Younger for the first time in 2005 as a winter seasonal, building upon the Pliny the Elder recipe while pushing the envelope with malt, hops, and alcohol just to see how far we could go! It is always brewed only once a year and released the first Friday in February, rain or shine.
