Hefe Shady Returns From Widmer Brothers Brewing As Its Summer Seasonal
As we creep closer and closer to summer, beer shelves and taps begin to see an increase selection of radlers and shandies. This special concoction of adding fruit juice or soda to lighter beer styles has been taking place for years but is a rapidly growing category here in the US beer market for breweries both small and large.
Last year Widmer Brothers Brewing introduced its Hefe Shandy, an enhanced take on adding a lemon wedge to the brewery’s iconic Hefeweizen. For Hefe Shandy, Widmer added natural lemonade flavor and lemon drop hops to take this version of Hefe to new heights. Hefe Shandy did not sit on shelves for very long, as it was a top-10 craft beer in the state of Oregon in 2016 according to Nielsen sales data.
On Thursday, June 2nd, Widmer will launch Hefe Shandy for the upcoming summer beer season at Bar Bar on North Mississippi Avenue from 5:00 to 8:00pm. For this year’s launch party Bar Bar will be serving up Hefe Shandy slushies from its slushy machine. This slushy will also be pouring at this year’s Portland Craft Beer Festival from June 1 – 3.
Widmer Hefe Shandy Description:
Hefe Shandy features Hefe’s signature hazy appearance with the addition of lemon drop hops and natural lemonade flavor. The lemonade flavor is noticeably toned down compared to other shandies in the market, and Widmer Brothers’ primary goal was to make Hefe Shandy taste like a beer first and foremost, and not a cloying fruit drink.
The lemon drop hops used in Hefe Shandy add to the natural lemon profile of the beer, and give it a distinct, bright citrus hop aroma. At 4.2 percent ABV, Hefe Shandy is the perfect session beer for when the summer days heat up.
