Lompoc Brewing Presents Its Holiday Beer Extravaganza + Garage Sale
As we fully enter the 2017 holiday season the brewers at Lompoc Brewing have gone all out to celebrate. Tonight from 4:00-11:00pm Lompoc Brewing hosts its Holiday Beer Extravaganza at its Sidebar location in North Portland. Then on Tuesday all seven beer will debut at Lompoc’s other three locations – Lompoc Tavern, 5th Quadrant and Oaks Bottom.
This year’s lineup includes old favorites such as Blitzen, Brewdolph, and C-Sons Greetings Double IPA. These three beers are brewed each year as Blitzen changes its recipe each year and Brewdolph changes most years. C-Sons was originally brewed in 2001 for the legendary Horse Brass Pub and has been brewed every year since.
When it comes to the four other releases for 2017, one of the beers pokes its head out on occasion. Old Tavern Rat 2016 will return as will a new barrel-aged version, Port Barrel Aged Old Tavern Rat 2016. Both versions of this popular barleywine live up to its reputation. The “regular” version of Old Tavern Rat offers up pleasant caramel and toffee flavors but its barrel aged counterpart is the one that truly showcases the talents of the Lompoc brew team led by Bryan Keilty. Having been aged in former Maryhill Winery Port barrels this beer is very smooth, especially for its 9.4% ABV.

The other two new releases for 2017 are Lump of Coal and Top Shelf, Old Sport came about from wanting to brew a beer a bit out of its wheelhouse. “Hey lets brake the mold and do something different,” stated Keilty at a recent media preview of many of these beers.
Top Shelf, Old Sport is the brewer’s entry into the 2017 Holiday Ale Festival. Being a Belgian-style dubbel, this beer offers some evolving, complex flavors as it warms up.
With Lump of Coal this beer used sour cherres from Hood River for six weeks of aging. There’s a tartness side to this beer that was not created by aging in barrels but from whatever was growing naturally in the countryside on the skins of the cherries.
Here’s a breakdown on tasting notes provided by Lompoc Brewing.
Blitzen: A bright straw colored holiday favorite that’s dry hopped with Mandarina Bavaria hops, soursop puree and coriander. The hops and soursop combine for a citrusy aroma and flavor while the coriander gives a slight spice at the back end. 4.6% ABV
Brewdolph: A Belgian style red ale that features a malty and creamy body. Brewed with the Belgian Ardennes yeast strain, it boasts a mild fruitiness and a spicy clove character. 7.7% ABV
C-Sons Greetings Double IPA: A deep copper colored ale brewed and dry-hopped with all seven “C” hops for a piney, citrusy, floral and resinous aroma. Offers a full hop flavor with a rich caramel malt finish and an endless developing hop presence. 8% ABV
Lump of Coal: An Imperial porter fermented with and aged on sour cherries for six weeks in a stainless steel tank. Notes of chocolate and cherries permeate with hints of tobacco and leather leaving a tangy finish on the palate. 8% ABV
Old Tavern Rat 2016: A dark amber colored barleywine that was aged for a year prior to its release. It has a strong bitterness that is balanced with the sweetness of caramel and toffee flavors. 9.4% ABV
Port Barrel Aged Old Tavern Rat 2016: A dark amber colored barleywine that was aged in Maryhill Winery Port barrels for eight months. It has notes of oak, toasted raisin bread and dark cherry followed by blackberry and caramel. 9.4% ABV
Top Shelf, Old Sport: A Holiday Ale Festival exclusive! One sip of this rich, malty Belgian style dubbel and you’ll find yourself transported to a padded Corinthian leather chair by a fireplace, perhaps discussing the day’s business with your fellow club members. Quaffing from a snifter of this dark brown ale, you’ll reminisce of Victorian-era aristocracy while enjoying strong notes of caramel, raisins, prunes, dates and oak. Aged for eight months in Maryhill Winery Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, the complex and robust yet delicate flavors of this ale compel you to take a sip, then nod and proclaim to your nearest chum, “Top shelf, old sport!” 7% ABV
