It’s St. Patrick’s Day and what is better than cracking open a bottle of Irish Whisky? One fine bottle that we are enjoying today is McConnell’s Sherry Cask Finish Irish Whisky.

McConnell’s is part of Irish Whisky heritage that dates back to 1776. It was then when brothers, John and James McConnell, opened their Belfast, Ireland distillery where they crafted the first recorded Irish Whisky brand.

Through the years McConnell’s Irish Whisky was recognized beyond Ireland when it was exported worldwide, including to American where it was once a popular brand of Irish Whisky. When World War I and then prohibition hit, the distillery was impacted and ended up shuttering in the 1930s.

Then after leaving the market for 90 years, the brand experienced new found success when Conecuh Brands brought the brand back to market. Distilled in Belfast by the Belfast Distillery Company, McConnell’s has released two whiskies –  McConnell’s Irish Whisky and McConnell’s Sherry Cask.

Similar to its other whisky, McConnell’s Irish Whisky, this Sherry Cask Finish is aged for five years in first fill select bourbon barrels from the U.S. Then to take this whisky a bit further. It is then finished for under a year in Oloroso Sherry Casks prior to bottling at 92 proof.

Poured in a Glencairn glass, McConnell’s Sherry Cask Finish pours an amber color. It is a bit darker than its other whisky, McConnell’s Irish Whisky. The nose is a bit complex with notes of chocolate and figs that leads into cinnamon and a touch of nuttiness. The whisky’s palate offers up caramel, toffee, vanilla, and cherries. It finishes with a touch of spice and oak dryness leaving you excited for your next sip!
