16 Tons Week of Wild and 2nd Anniversary
|Since 2010, 16 Tons Beer & Wine of Eugene, Oregon has greatly added to the city’s craft beer culture with a number of killer events, tastings, and simply by offering a wonderful selection of artisan brews to the community. To celebrate this achievement, founder Mike Coplin and his team of craft beverage lovers will throw a week-long party dubbed “Week of Wild” that will showcase an impressive array of wild/sour ales from near and far. One particular highlight to be featured will be a special wild blend composed by Upright Brewing of Portland named “El Coloquio de Cervantes”, a barrel-aged dark rye saison with raspberries. All this is taking place April 23-29, 2012. Here’s more details from Coplin and 16 Tons:
We will be pouring ales ranging from Farmhouse to Funky, from Tart to Tooth-Achingly-Acidic. Rustic, Sour, Barrel Aged, Spontaneously Fermented, and simply Wild ales. Beer is created when Yeast is introduced to the sweet, malty liquid known as wort. Traditionally this yeast did not come from labs and was not studied and separated under a microscope. It was introduced naturally, wildy, spontaneously. Wild Ales have had a huge resurgence in popularity in the last few years.
The “Wild Yeast” that is used is now cultivated in labs, but the labs endeavor to duplicate the Wild Yeast blends that have occurred naturally in the great beer regions south of Brussels, Belgium and in the Flanders region of Belgium.
Week of Wild (4/23-29) will culminate Saturday & Sunday with a festival featuring 70 wild ales. No entry fee, cash only, $1-$3 for tasters. The Festival also marks our 2nd anniversary, 16 Taphouse opened its doors the last weekend in April in 2010.
