American Society of Brewing Chemists Presents Modest Malt: The Soul of Beer
|The American Society of Brewing Chemists will return the McMenamins Mission Theater as it presents Modest Malt: The Soul of Beer industry seminar. This seminar on malt will take place on Monday, March 11, 2019 from 5:00-10:00pm.
Join the American Society of Brewing Chemists at McMenamins Mission Theater in Portland, Oregon, for this year’s ASBC LABS meeting on the evening of Monday, March 11. By popular demand, the theme of this year’s meeting will be “Modest Malt: The Soul of Beer” and will focus on barley as a raw material in the brewing process with an emphasis on flavor. Although often overlooked considering the popularity of hop-forward American ales, malted barley is truly the backbone of beer, and our beloved beverage would not be the same without it! We are excited to learn more about barley as it relates to flavor and flavor stability from Dr. Patricia Aron, Manager of Brewing and Raw Materials Research and Innovation at Rahr Malting Co., and Dr. Dustin Herb, Courtesy Faculty at Oregon State University and Plant Breeder for OreGro Seeds, Nutrien Ag Solutions. We look forward to hearing more about the excellent research they have been working on related to the OSU malt flavor project in collaboration with Deschutes, New Glarus, and Russian River Brewing, as well as the Brewers Association, Rahr Malting, Mecca Grade Estate Malting, and CPS-OreGro seeds. In addition, Joe Casey of Craft Brew Alliance will provide perspective on malt flavor from a brewer’s perspective.
