Shock Top is back with a fan favorite seasonal beer that’s perfect for the fall season that awaits us. Yes, one of the brand’s most requested beers is back with a vengeance as Shock Top Twisted Pretzel has landed in 6-packs, 12-packs, and on draft.

Twisted Pretzel was first brewed back in 2014 to celebrate National Pretzel day that takes place on April 26. Since then the beer was brewed on occasion, the last time in 2021 when Anheuser-Busch still owned the brand. The beer has developed a strong fan base. Strong enough that there’s a Facebook Group named Keep Shock Top Twisted Pretzel Wheat Beer.

Now under the ownership of Tilray Brands, Shock Top has heard the calls from Twisted Pretzel fans and has brought this beer back out of retirement as its fall seasonal beer. It’s the perfect time of the year with Oktoberfest celebrations that will soon be taking place so why not combine the flavors of an amber ale and the bready saltiness of a pretzel all in one serving!

After securing a 6-pack of Twisted Pretzel we were eager to give it a try. The last time we sampled this beer was at the defunct Portland Spring Beer & Wine Festival.

Twisted Pretzel is definitely a unique, almost novelty beer, but not unlike some of the popular smoothie beers that have been in the marketplace over the past few years. We kind of think of Twisted Pretzel as being like the Jones Soda’s Thanksgiving Pack from a well over a decade ago. You set your sight on a creative flavor profile and aim for it!

The packaging of Twisted Pretzel is a nice take on the famous Wedgehead that adorns all of Shock Top’s beers. Since the Anheuser-Busch created the brewery in 2006, the Wedgehead caricature has been a focal point on all packaging. Most recently, the brewery’s mascot has been an orange wedge with a mohawk of wheat on head of a slice of orange with a pair of dark sunglasses. For the Twisted Pretzel label, Wedgehead has been tweaked as his orange scalp has been replaced with one that’s a pretzel.

Twisted Pretzel’s label states that the beer is a Belgian-Style Wheat Ale brewed with Caramel Malt and artificial flavors at 5% ABV. It pours a dark amber brown color with a nice tan head. The aroma is full of bready character, eerily similar to that of a pretzel. It’s also reminiscent of making beer bread at home with a bottle of beer. When it comes to the beer’s flavor, up front its similar to an amber ale with adjuncts of toasty bread, butter and a touch of salinity that comes through.

“Fall is a season of change, and what better way to embrace it than with a beer that’s as bold and unique as Shock Top’s Twisted Pretzel,” said Ryan Workman, Shock Top’s director of marketing. “We’re excited to bring back this long-awaited beer for our fans and make it the best and boldest part of their autumn traditions again.”
