Fort George Brewery to Release Matryoshka 2021 in December 2020

Come celebrate Stout Month in Astoria a bit early as Fort George Brewery will release Matryoshka 2021 in 500mL bottles on Saturday, December 12th. Yes, a few months earlier than the normal release in February, but since the Festival of Dark Arts is cancelled in 2021, Fort George is saving something special for the shortest month of the year.

Matryoshka is Fort George’s highly anticipated whiskey and bourbon barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout. For this vintage, Matryoshka 2021 was aged for one year in a blend of Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Westward Whiskey barrels. This barrel aged stout is an exercise in balance and intensity, full of bold flavors such as vanilla, anise, chocolate, coffee, and charred oak, all integrating seamlessly. The high gravity and robust mouthfeel give the beer heft and substance, while remaining smooth and deceivingly drinkable at 12.8% ABV.

Appearance: black with a light brown head
Aroma: sweet vanilla, chocolate, coffee
Flavor: reminiscent of melted chocolate
and vanilla bean ice cream
ABV: 12.8%

Then come February 2021, Fort George will release six variants of Matryoshka. Four variants have been aging in Westward Whiskey barrels and Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels while the other two variants have been aging in Jamaican rum barrels. When these six Matryoshka variants are released, Fort George will be selling a limited mixed-Matryoshka case that will include the 2021 variants and a limited edition Matryoshka tasing glass.
