Whiskey Wednesday – Clonakilty Father of All Tsunamis Stout Cask Finish Irish Whiskey
|The coastal waters of Ireland and Oregon come together once again on the release of Clonakilty Father of All Tsunamis Stout Cask Finish Irish Whiskey. Yes, a new whiskey from Clonakilty Distillery from West Cork, Ireland and Pelican Brewing from the Oregon Coast is now available at select liquor stores within the state of Oregon.
Founded by the Scully family in 2018, Clonakilty Distillery opened its doors to a $10 million facility in the heart of West Cork, Ireland. The family has farmed this windswept coastal land for 9 successive generations. With the best resources that nature has to offer, prime land, pristine water and salt sea air, they have the perfect ingredients for a maritime distillery. It is on this land where they distil their award-winning new make whiskey and age their casks, safely tucked away in their warehouse on a windswept cliff edge next to the Atlantic Ocean.
Clonakilty Father of All Tsunamis Stout Cask Finish Irish Whiskey begins its journey into aging with Pelican Brewing’s award-winning Father of All Tsunamis Imperial Stout casks. Post-disgorgement in Tillamook, Oregon, eight of these precious casks were shipped to Clonakilty, Ireland for Clonakilty’s whiskey to age in.
Upon arrival in West Cork, Ireland at Clonakilty Distillery, there former casks were immediately filled with non-chill filtered Clonakilty Irish Whiskey. After patiently waiting for this whiskey to come of age, 2,900 limited-edition bottles were filled at 104 proof and began their journey back across the Atlantic to be distributed in liquor stores throughout Oregon.
“As an independent distillery heavily focused on sustainability it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with a company like Pelican, who align with so many of our core values,” said Sean Scully of Clonakilty Distillery. “Being such a ‘big’ beer, the phenomenal ex-stout casks that Pelican are gracious enough to provide us with, not only contribute beautiful traditional stout characteristics to the whiskey but also bring a delightful creamy mouthfeel to the forefront.”
But it’s not just the Scully family giving praise to this new whiskey. “I just love how robust and rich the Clonakilty Father of All Tsunamis Stout Finish came out,” said Darron Welch, Pelican Brewmaster. “The depth of flavor and rounded finish make for an incredibly satisfying dram!”
Clonakilty Father of All Tsunamis Stout Cask Finish Irish Whiskey pours a very light color for a whiskey, one that’s similar to that of a Pale Ale. The nose on this whiskey is sweet vanilla, honey and chocolate. Moving onto the palate, it’s a bit complex with a lot of flavors going round. There’s a bit of creaminess that overshadows the vanilla and oak. The 104 proof is noticeable as well leading into the finish that’s a bit grainy and dry.
For a younger whiskey, Clonakilty Father of All Tsunamis Stout Cask Finish Irish Whiskey is enjoyable, especially for fans of Pelican Brewing. We just wished we had a bottle of Father of All Tsunamis Imperial Stout that could be enjoyed side by side.
Clonakilty Father of All Tsunamis Stout Cask Finish Irish Whiskey is now available in Oregon liquor stores priced at $69.95 per 750mL bottle. To locate a bottle visit: oregonliquorsearch.com.
