Oregon’s famous brewery on the beach, Pelican Brewing Company, celebrates 21 years of brewing in 2017. During this time the brewery has been awarded over 400 medals for its brewing efforts. To celebrate this milestone on May 4, 2017 Pelican will celebrate with the re-birth of Doryman’s Dark Ale as this beer will be on draft at all Pelican locations in Pacific City, Tillamook, and Cannon Beach. This is the first Gold Medal winning beer for founding brewmaster Darron Welch.
Here’s more from the press release…
Doryman’s Dark Ale was adapted from Welch’s prize-winning homebrew recipe and showcases his love of history with one of the earliest beer styles directly attributed to American craft brewers. Doryman’s, which was Pelican’s first Gold medal winner, took the prize at the 1999 Great American Beer Festival in the American Brown Ale category. This rich toasty brew forever holds a special place in Pelican’s heart, no matter the birthday they celebrate.
Notes of caramel and toasty malt combine with citrusy hop flavors, floral hop aromas for a dark chocolate character with a clean, crisp finish. A review in Draft Magazine writes: “Beneath its rocky, tan head, Doryman’s Dark Ale is deep mahogany with ruby edges that glisten in the light. Its nutty aroma meshes with a slightly floral hop character creating an interesting marriage that’s alluring and mouthwatering. As the smooth beer hits the tongue offering only a light carbonic kick, a complex collection of malt flavors unfold: toast, light chocolate, and caramel sink into the taste buds. Take another sip, and a nutty character emerges. While this beer definitely showcases its malts, hop bitterness rises in the back to keep the darker flavors in check. Finishing dry, but not so much as to whitewash the flavors, a lingering dark chocolate character sticks to the palate, tempting another sip.”(6.2% ALC. BY VOL. / 42 IBU)

“As we celebrate 21 years, we realize that we are incredibly fortunate to live and work in a place as amazing as the Oregon Coast and we are thankful for all the folks that have helped us over the years: our employees, our shareholders, and our communities,” says Jim Prinzing. “The really fun part is that for many companies 21 years is a milestone to reach, but for Pelican it is just the beginning of the journey—with our recent brewery expansion in Tillamook, our new brewpub in Cannon Beach, and a truly incredible staff of talented people we are excited about all the creative opportunities ahead of us.”
With consistent growth and demand for its products, Pelican recently increased brewing and bottling capacity at its Tillamook facility to over 38,000 barrels and opened a new brewpub last year in Cannon Beach. New Pelican facilities enable the highly-decorated brewer to continue its exploration of special brews like the small batch Lone Pelican Series and Barrel-aged Collection.
Born at the Beach Pelican was born at the beach 21 years ago as a small, stand alone brewpub in a small town on the Oregon coast—Pacific City. Pacific City is still a small town, but with consistent growth and demand for its products, Pelican sales are up more than 500% from 3,500 barrels in 2013 to 18,000 barrels this year. The company recently doubled its brewing and bottling capacity at its Tillamook facility and opened a new brewpub in Cannon Beach. Pelican also recently won a bronze medal at the World Brew Cup℠ and eight medals including Champion Medium International Brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards.
According to founding brewmaster Darron Welch, Pelican has always been focused on creating as wide a range of beers as possible:
Designed and brewed with innovation and craftsmanship
Showing guests and fans the many possibilities of flavor in the world of beer
Dedicated attention to detail in the pursuit of quality and consistency
