Oregon Breweries Take Home 29 Awards at the 2024 World Beer Cup
Last evening, the 2024 World Beer Cup Awards Ceremony took place. This is the largest beer competition in the world and is hosted now each year by the Brewers Association (BA). The United States based BA honored the top 329 beers in the world amongst 110 categories.
The World Beer Cup awards ceremony was held at the Venetian Convention and Expo Center in Las Vegas, NV on April 24, 2024. It also once again coincided with the annual Craft Brewers Conference® & BrewExpo America® that took place earlier in the week.
Regionally, Oregon breweries were awarded 29 World Beer Cup Awards while Washington State breweries were awarded 15 awards and one Idaho brewery took home one award. A great showing for the Pacific Northwest!
The judging for the World Beer Cup took place during 14 sessions spanning seven days. A panel of 280 judges hailing from 37 countries methodically evaluated 9,300 entries from 2,060 breweries across 50 countries.
“Each award represents not only exceptional quality but also innovation and creativity, driving the global craft beer industry forward,” said Chris Williams, World Beer Cup competition director, in a statement. “This year’s winners exemplify the spirit of craftsmanship and ingenuity and showcase the diverse flavors and techniques that make beer an art form. Congratulations to this year’s winners for their outstanding achievements in brewing.”
Out of 330 possible awards, 329 were conferred at the 2024 World Beer Cup. Gold was not awarded in Category 69 for Belgian-Style or French-Style Ale.
Of the 110 beer categories, on average there were 54 beers entered per category. The most entered categories were Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale: 326 entries; West-Coast Style India Pale Ale: 281 entries; German-Style Pilsener: 221 entries; American-Style India Pale Ale: 213 entries; and Wood & Barrel-Aged Strong Stout: 198 entries.
The Beaver State did quite well. In all, Oregon breweries took home 29 World Beer Cup Awards. Of these, eleven were Gold, ten were Silver and eight were Bronze. Twelve of Oregon’s World Beer Cup awards came from Bend based breweries. There’s some top-notch brewing talent in that Central Oregon city!
Oregon’s largest winning breweries were Deschutes Brewery and 10 Barrel Brewing, each taking home four World Beer Cup Awards. Deschutes Brewery were honored with three Gold Awards and one Silver Award. Whereas 10 Barrel Brewing were awarded four awards, two Gold Awards and one Silver Award and Bronze Award. 10 Barrel Brewing also swept the German-Style Sour Ale category, a beer style that’s championed by Tonya Cornett, the latest recipient of the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Craft Brewing.
Other notable Oregon winners include Grand Fir Brewing with three Silver Awards, just in its second year in business. Outside of Portland, Bend Brewing, Monkless Belgian Ales, pFriem Family Brewers, and Sunriver Brewing, each were honored with two awards,
Our neighbors to the north in Washington State were awarded 15 World Beer Cup Awards. Its breweries took home four Gold, seven Silver, and four Bronze Awards.
The largest winning brewery from Washington was Formula Brewing from Issaquah as it received four World Beer Cup Awards, one Gold, two Silver and one Bronze. Not too bad for a four-year-old brewery located just off I-90 east of Seattle. Then a brewery located just minutes from the Oregon border, Grains of Wrath Brewing, continues its winning streak at the World Beer Cup with three awards, one Gold and two Silver.
