BLACK FRIDAY & BLACK IPAs / CDAs

Cascadian Dark Ale

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day, many retailers open very early, and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season, similar to Boxing Day sales in many Commonwealth countries. Black Friday is not actually a holiday, but many employers give their employees the day off, increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005,although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time.

For those more interested in hoppy dark ales, the Green Dragon (928 SE 9th Avenue, Portland, OR) and BREWPUBLIC are putting together a fun event to give new meaning to Black Friday. On Friday November 23, 2012, several piny, resinous, floral dark beers know widely as Black IPAs, and in our neck of the woods as Cascadian Dark Ales, will be pouring. So forget the insanity of the stressful shopping malls and join us for this fun all-day event!

Black Friday & Black IPAs
November 23rd @ The Green Dragon

11 AM – Close

Green Dragon To honor Black Friday the Green Dragon will be holding a blowout Warehouse Garage Sale November 21st – 25th where there will be great deals on Rogue t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, glasses and a wide assortment of cased goods.

Doors open at 11AM. Get all of your holiday shopping done while enjoying a Black IPA / CDA.

Microhopic 3 at Migration Brewing

Brewpublic‘s past two MICROHOPIC events were a lot of fun (click here for a recap of the last one, and here for pics from the inaugural event), so we’ve decided to continue on with them. MICROHOPIC is a series showcasing new and interesting breweries and beer styles from around Oregon. In our third installment of MICROHOPIC, our friends at Migration Brewing Company will host and participate in this unique tasting experience. In addition to Migration’s fine house brews, we will also be showcasing newer releases from Amnesia Brewing, Beetje Brewery, Breakside Brewery, and Burnside Brewing. These five Portland craft microbreweries encapsulate the spirit of innovation in brewing amongst Portland’s many distinct artisans. Plus, they are a younger, fresher face to the community that we are eager for you to experience first hand, therefor, brewers and brewery representatives will be on hand to discuss their work with folks. Here’s the details of the event :

When: April 23, 2011  6PM-midnight

Where: Migration Brewing 2828 NE Glisan Street, Portland, Oregon (click here for map)

Why: Because we are crazy about craft beer.

The Beers:

Amnesia Dry-Hopped Red Handed Ale

This dry-hopped rendition of Amnesia’s beautifully colored red ale brings for exquisite citrus and piny notes that support an underpinning of bready and chewy malt character with a touch of roast.

Beetje Touch of Esen

From one of Portland’s smallest breweries (Beetje literally means “Little One”), comes this new one-off ale. An amber ale dry hopped with Amarillo. This the second experiment with the yeast that, reportedly, originates from De Dolle Brouwerij. 4.8% ABV, 47 IBU.

Breakside Rye Kölsch

From one of Portland’s newest and most innovative breweries comes the one of a kind brew. This light rye ale meant to usher in more daylight and warmer spring days. Utilizing two different kinds of rye malt that constitute 20% of the total grain bill, and hopped exclusively with Hallertau hops, this brew will also be pumped through a randall filled with fresh cucumbers and juniper berries. This flavor amalgamation is designed to create a character reminiscent of a Tom Collins. Visit Breakside’s brewpub each Wednesday at 3PM for new unique releases. 5.2% 25 IBU.

Burnside Stock Ale

Burnside Stock Ale displays soft malt flavor with a delicate hop flavor and aroma. This is the perfect balance between both, creating a perfectly harmonious ale with a striking deep copper color. Made in the E.S.B. tradition. Burnside Stock Ale, as all Burnside Beers is unfiltered. This requires an increased time commitment, but pays dividends in the depth, character, and flavor profile of our offerings. 5.8% ABV,  51 IBU

Migration PDX

PDX which is a light Kölsch-style beer displaying notes of lemon zest from the distinctive Sorchai Ace hops used, weighing in at 27 IBU’s and 4.3% ABV, Brewer Michael Branes used a the delightful 2565 German Kölsch yeast.

No tokens or advance tickets necessary, just come by the pub and order at the bar…

My Beery Valentine

My Beery Valentine Celebrate Valentines Day with Decadent and Delectable Beer at Saraveza Brewpublic’s 2nd Annual My Beery Valentine offers a variety of unique, specialty, and one-off craft beers with sweethearts and sweettooths in mind. Pouring on this night: * Block 15 Love Potion #9: Brewed special for this occasion by the Corvallis brewers at Block 15. “A hint of earthiness just ahead of a hearty fruit flavor somewhere between … wait for it … blackberry & red raspberry. Nice roasty support & not too sweet” -Dave Selden 33Beers.com * Cascade Chocolate Raspberry: Using the last keg of the past fall’s Fresh Hop Porter and a new version of Busta Nut Brown, the brewers and blenders at Cascade added some raspberry infused triple and straight Bourbonic. You will get raspberries and chocolate in the nose, and bitter chocolate, tart fruit and dark spices on the tongue. The Bourbonic finishes it up in a way that only Bourbonic can. 8% ABV. * Double Mountain Bonne Idée Avec Kriek: This beer is one you may never be able to try again. This complex brew combines the regular Bonne Idee, developed originally for 2009?s Portland’s Cheers To Belgian Beers, blended 85/15 with Devil’s Kriek 2010, brewed over the summer. With cherries grown at Brewmaster Matt Swihart’s orchard in Hood River and the addition of Brettanomyces, the result is tart, sweet, and ever-changing specimen. * Fort George Bourbon BBL Cavatica: “Our Cavatica Stout was left to sit and age in Wild Turkey barrels for two and a half months. The day before we transferred the stout into a serving tank we had one of the Wild Turkey barrels explode on us sending delicious stout all down Duane St. It never smelled so good on this block. What was once a very delicious bourbon stout has become a limited edition bourbon stout.” -Chris Nemlowill, co-founder of Fort George Brewery. * Fort George Murky Pearl Oyster Stout: Many believe that oysters are an aphrodisiac. This brewed with three buckets Willapa Bay oysters run through wort. Then the brewers let the oysters sit in the wort until they popped open infusing the beer with the briny oyster juice. Although you cannot taste an immense amount of oyster in this stout, you can taste a hint of salty goodness that lingers in this beer. Chris say “Drinking this beer is truly like kissing the ocean.” * Ninkasi Vanilla Oatis: A vanilla infused version of Ninkasi’s beloved Oatmeal Stout. “It is a pure confection, with the vanilla unexpectedly drawing out a long, intense chocolate note…tastes like a float, and I kept expecting to see a dollop of vanilla ice cream float up. The whole experience is accentuated by the creaminess of the stout, which is like silk.” -Jeff Alworth, Beervana Blog. * Oakshire Heart Shaped Box: This exclusive release is an Oatmeal Stout aged in a Heaven Hill bourbon barrel with cherries, organic cocoa nibs, organic espresso, and vanilla beans. Brewmaster Matt Van Wyk’s ability to produce some of Oregon’s finest beers has us drawn into his magnet tar pit trap. * Upright Blend Love: “A combination of the upcoming second batch of Four Play, the brewery’s annual sour cherry wheat beer with some barrel-aged Six using raspberry puree, yielding a complex and one of a kind fruit laden brew paying homage to one of our most beloved local brewers.” -Upright brewer/founder Alex Ganum Saraveza will also feature special treats courtesy of Sugar Pimp to pair with these delicious brews. Saraveza is located at 1004 North Killingsworth Street in Portland, Oregon. For more information, visit their website: http://saraveza.com

PORTLAND, OR –Brewpublic is pleased to announce our second Microhopic event featuring some of the area’s smallest commercial breweries and even a few we’re sure you have not experienced before. Microhopic 2 is not a nano beer event. We like to think of it more as a pico, femto, atto, zepto, or even yotto brew event. One of Portland’s best craft beer pubs, Bailey’s Taproom will devote more than half of their 20 taplines for the following exclusive breweries: Big Horse: Hood River, Oregon’s Big Horse Brewing features the beer of imaginative brewmaster Jason Kahler. At this event, folks will get to try the brewery’s Pale Rider IPA (6.7% ABV) featuring CTZ hops. Mount Tabor: A relative newcomer to the burgeoning Portland craft beer scene, this small Montavilla neighborhood brewery lead by brewer Eric Surface and owner Brian Maher will bring their Little Bull Stout, a full bodied 7% 100+ IBU hoppy treat. Blue House: From the hidden westside village of Vernonia, Oregon comes a special Blueberry Wheat Ale made with Oregon blueberries by brewer Brett Costley of Blue House Cafe, a unique and Mediterranean restaurant offering delicious food and artisan beer. Breakside Brewery: Finally Portland’s long awaited Northside brewery Breakside will be showcasing the craft beers from brewer Ben Edmunds. For this event, look for a special Texas Brown Ale (dark hoppy ale) to quench the thirst of the beer lovers. Migration: Brewer Mike Branes combines Nuggets, Cascades, and Fuggles with Crystal, Carmel, and Biscuit malts for this flagship offering known as the MPA (Migration Pale Ale). Copper in color with light to medium body. 5.5% ABV 55 IBU. Buckman Village Brewery: The Green Dragon Pub & Bistro’s own small brewery known as Buckman offers us a glimpse into the early phase of their brewery with their Chamomellow Ale made by brewer John Couchot. This chamomile-infused golden ale weighs in around 6% ABV, 19 IBU. Lots of honey apple notes from the herbal spice. Rivergate: Deep in North Portland, Rivergate Brewing at the North End Pub offers European-inspired beers brewed by founder Brian Frisch. Frisch, who spent time fine-tuning his brewing skills while in Scotland and the Czech Republic will be pouring a limited keg of his Kölsch-style beer, a style originating in Cologne, Germany. Coalition: One of Portland’s favorite new breweries, Coalition has been dedicated to being their neighborhood’s brewery. Allowing homebrewers to have a hand in recipe development under brewmaster Bruce MacPhee and assistant brewer/owner Elan Walsky, Coalition will bring a house favorite, their hoppy amber ale known as King Kitty Red. A deliciously balanced red, King Kitty begins with a sweet medium bodied malt profile, with light roasty notes from a german black malt, Carafa II. The sweet caramel notes are balanced with Amarillo and nugget hops in the front, and Willamette in back. A combination of Sterling and Amarillo hops used in the hop back give the beer its complex nose. 5.75% ABV 59 IBU. Natian: Portland’s Nation Brewing is the brainchild of Ian McGuinness and Natalia Laird. Brewer McGuinness offers us a distinctly lupulin laden bold IPA known as Big Block IPA. Finishing out at 6.8% ABV, this new IPA has been a favorite of the brewer and he’s confident that you will feel the same. Beetje Brouwerij: We’re so pleased to debut the beer of Portland’s newest brewery (this could change in a day/week the way they’ve been popping up here). Beetje (pronounced bay-cha) is the Belgian-inspired brewery from Southeast Portland of brewer Mike Wright. For Microhopic 2, Wright offers his Urban Farmhouse Ale, a light, easy drinking beer meant to quench your thirst. 5.25% ABV, 21 IBU’s. Made with Organic pilsner and 2-row malt and a pinch of crystal malt. Hops: Goldings, Hallertauer, and Willamette. Fermented with a Belgian farmhouse ale yeast. Vertigo Brewing: No micro beer fest is complete without the quenching beers of Hillsboro, Oregon’s Vertigo Brewing. Soon to expand to a 7-bbl brewhouse, Vertigo has produced a mindblowing amount of beer on a 1-bbl brewhouse thus far. For our event at Bailey’s brewers Mike Kinion and Mike Haines bring an amped up version of their flagship Friar Mike’s IPA known as Friar Gone Wild. This Imperial IPA weighs in at about 8.5% ABV and a boisterous 114 IBU’s. Says Haines “We figured it only made sense to bring a macrohopic beer to the microhopic event!” Microhopic 2.0 takes place on September 8, 2010 at Bailey’s Taproom (213 SW Broadway Street) in Portland, Oregon. Event starts at 4PM and lasts until the kegs are emptied.

Also on tap will be Upright Brewing’s Gose. Brewer Alex Ganum states it “uses the typical coriander and salt in what we think is a balanced manner along with a blend of roughly half pilsner malt and half malted wheat. We decided to use the house French saison strain because it has a bit of tartness to it naturally but also employed a sour mash like we do on the Four and added a pinch of lactic acid to acidify the water a bit further. It ended up quite dry and hit 5.2% ABV. I think the mix of dryness, acidity and saltiness makes it easy and enjoyable to drink plenty of – our kind of beer.” GosebierWhere: Victory Bar on 3652 SE Division St. When: Monday, December 21st, 2009, 6 PM – 9 PM About Gose biers: The Gose style dates back to the early 18th Century in the town of Goslar, Germany, in the Lower Saxony in the northwest slopes of the Harz Mountains. Brewed with at least 50% malted wheat in the grain bill, Gose beer fell outside of the Reinheitsgebot due to the use of salt and coriander spice. However, the beer was allowed special exception due to it being considered a regional specialty. Goses became so popular in Leipzig, a city now consisting of more than half a million people, that several regional breweries started brewing Goses themselves. By the end of the 19th Century, it was considered to be the local style of Leipzig and there were countless Gosenschänke in the city. Gose beer is characteristically sour due to the presence of lactobacillus bacteria after the boil. Traditionally brewed Goses often fall within the 4-5% ABV range and give off a distinct lemon herbal zest and quenching saltiness initially derived from the hard water where it originated, but since then, salt is added. 12-21-09:  Cascade Brewers Ron Gansberg, Curtis Bain and Upright Brewers Alex Ganum and Gerritt Ill will be on hand to discuss the Gose bier style…

Brewpublic Killer Beer Fest

Saturday October 10, 2009

Bailey’s Taproom (213 SW Broadway, PDX) 4PM-Midnight On this special night during Portland’s Fresh Hop weekend, Brewpublic has curated a line-up of never tasted before beers from the Pacific Northwest. Barrel-aged brews, Belgian-style specialties, and other one of a kind and one-off brews. Most of these beers will not be available again. Bailey’s provides a great environment for tasting these beers and they will be offered in 10 oz and 20 oz imperial pints, as well as sample trays.Confirmed beers include: Cascade Brewing 5 Barrel Thread: a one-only blend of five amazing beers: Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad, White Port Aged Raspberry, Barrel Aged Triple, Apricot and Sour Pie Kriek. The blend may sound a bit odd, but brewers Ron Gansberg and Curtis Bain say you’ll be surprised by the “lift and color found in the final result.” Barley Brown’s Baker City Wild Wet-Hopped American Strong Pale Ale: Employing country roadside hops from Baker City, Oregon, this beer is a kind one of kind. Brewer Shawn Kelso says “It’s pretty hoppy and at 7.25% ABV you may want to just call it an I.P.A. It was brewed with fresh hand picked unknown hops that grow wild on the side of a road here in Baker City. I put 36 pounds in a 3bbl batch. It’s pretty damn tasty!” Caldera Rose Pedal Imperial Golden Ale: Made with 11 pounds of rose pedals and two liters of Bulgarian rose water, brewer Jim Mills says “this beers tastes like a party at Grandma’s house.” This is the only keg of this taproom exclusive beer to reach Portland and is dangerously delicious!Vertigo Midnight Harvest Fresh-hop Ale: Hand crafted especially for this season, start-up Hillsboro brewers Mike Haines and Mike Kinion handpicked fresh Willamette and Cascade hops through the night for this gem of a brew. Standing Stone Wet-Hop Amber Ale: Snagged from brewer Adam Benson on our last Southern Oregon trip, this piquant red ale is floral, fruity and bright with crispy, chewy notes exhibiting a fiercely drinkable presence. From one of Oregon’s most sustainably-minded brewery’s, here is a beer we are truly honored to serve at this event. Block15 Bourbon Barrel-aged Fat Monk Dubbel: Still aging as we speak, this beer is near ready. This brew is sure to wow the palate and the mind. Aged in one Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old bourbon cask. This will only produce 3.5 kegs. Count on Bailey’s and Brewpublic to tap one of them sonofaguns! Hopworks Oregon Oak Aged Diablito: Brewer Ben Love set us up with a special rendition of HUB’s effervescent Belgian singel ale. This bubbly quaffer is nicely spiced and according to love the bright Oregon oak adds additional peppery spice to the equation. Seven Brides Imperial Marzenfest: Deep chestnut-brown bodied with enough belly-warming bite to last throughout the winter, this distinctly hardly sipper hails from Silverton, Oregon in the heart of harvest country. This weekend is sure to take care of the hop heads and this beer is reppin’ for the malt heads as well. Oakshire Collaborative Evil Belgian-inspired Strong Pale: One of three kegs see make its way to the Portland. The other was tapped over the summer at Belmont Station and the other at Saraveza for Brewpublic’s 1st Year Brewniversary. BJ’s Enfant Terrible: One of the last kegs of this brew whose began life as an unblended base beer from the brewery’s 2007 OBF entry which was racked into clean whiskey barrels and fermented with a Lambic yeast/bacteria blend. It’s well attenuated and has become quite funky over the last couple of years. Walkabout Jabberwocky Strong Ale: Not found around Portland, the beers of Central Point, Oregon’s Walkabout are undeniably full-bodied. Brewer Ross Litton has an affinity for bold ingredient-laden brews and this is perhaps his finest example. Jabberwocky is dark and hoppy and with a smooth creeping palatability that has been known to “knock a dick in the dirt.” Hop Valley Vanilla Porter: Rarely seen in Portland (except at joints like Bailey’s Taproom), this dessertif features fresh organic vanilla beans in the conditioning tank. Brewer Trevor Howard is no stranger to bold beer. Opened in Springfield, Oregon in 2009, here’s a great new brew to celebrate a wonderful year of Beaver State craft brews. Beer Valley Gone Fishin’: Here’s a mild ale with a low hop level to refresh you after a hard fest o’drinkin’. Beer Valley Brewing in Ontario is Oregon’s easternmost brewery and the furthest in the state of Portland. Here’s a first time on tap in Portland brew to enjoy with mild candy notes and a crisp malt underpinning. Thanks to brewer Pete Ricks for hookin’ this one up and helpin’ reel ‘er in. New Old Lompoc Barrel Fermented Centennial IPA: 100% fermented in a vintage white English oak barrel. Brewed with crystal malts that give it a rich golden color. Brewer Bryan Kielty says “There is a floral nose, sharp bitter finish, and a slight tough of oak.” Roots Organic Oak-aged Island Red: From Oregon’s first all-organic certified brewery cometh this bourbon oak aged brew. Aged a well over a month in Pappy Von Winkle bourbon casks, this beer promises to be bready, full-bodied, and warming. The brewery describes it as “deep crimson creamy body with a tight elegant head.” Double Mountain Abbey Hoffman Belgian Brown Ale: Only available at the Hood River tasting room, here is another glowing example of DM’s eclectic abilities. Spicy and mouth wateringly robust. The 7.5% ABV is well masked with rows of piquant yeastiness and delectable almond notes. Count on a great beer every time from one of Oregon’s finest craft breweries. Steal this beer! Upright Fresh Hop of Bel-Air: Brewer and friend Alex Ganum say “This firkin of the Fresh Hop of Bel Air is filled with a saison made with fresh liberty hops from Annen brothers farm in Mt. Angel and was then dry-hopped with more liberty hops (dried) from the same farm. 6.2%” Perfect beer for maxin’ and relaxin.’ Full Sail Vesuvius: This hybridization of a Belgian golden ale holds a dryness without being phlegmatic. Fruity esters imparted by the yeast meld with a fortuitous alcoholic girth to deliver a wallop of a wake-up call to the senses. The use of Saaz and Sterian hops tweak the beer to give it an Imperial Pilsner-esque attitude that is tucked behind the imposing yeastiness. This brew is a part of Full Sail’s Brewmaster Reserve Series and only a dozen kegs of it will be released this year. Lucky Lab Bourbon Barrel-aged Irish Red Ale: Lucky Lab brewer Ben Flerchinger delivers a one-of-a-kind keg of this sufficiently boozy, creamy, and nutty Irish-styled red ale. Here’s another beer you won’t find anywhere else around and it promised to be as delicious as any other specialty brews from LL’s beer geek repertoire. Fort George CoHoperative Fresh Hop Ale: Fresh sticky hops brought in by the brewing community (much like Lucky Lab’s Mutt Hop Ale). This pale amber beer should provide a piny, floral presence. Says Beervana’s Jeff Alworth “I got a candy-sweet aroma with the tiniest bit of hop, slightly citrus, slightly spicy. It was what I’d call a “normal” hop aroma–nothing funky or unidentifiably herbal. On the palate, the hops come through sharply, and in a standard citrus-bitter spectrum I recognized.” Big Horse Mac Stallion Scotch Ale: As described by the brewery: “A deep walnut colored ale with hints of smoke, dried fruit and alcohol. Low on hops, high on malts.” This beer is a rare treat for Portlanders who would normally have to trek out to  the Columbia Gorge to experience a brew from this wonderful brewery. Barely big enough to meet the demand of Hood River, brewer Jason Kahler is one of Oregon’s finest in the craft. We find this nice amber-copper bodied beer with a medium white head to possess just the right balance of sweet, peaty malty, mildly nutty flavor. Well balanced and true to style. Yee haw! Deschutes Hop Henge #6: This hophead-focused IPA is the latest in Deschutes’ lupulin lovin’ repertoire. According to Deschutes: “The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer.” Deschutes Brewmaster Larry Sidor says “When people taste Hop Henge, I want them to stop and realize – ‘Wow, this is what hops are supposed to do. I am interested in creating hop perfection, and for Hop Henge that means producing a great aroma and a juicy hop experience.”  8.75% ABV, 95 IBU. We’ve got a few other brews up our sleeve like a Lagunita’s Saison and some that haven’t been confirmed yet it will be awesome and definitely killer! See you there!
