Mayfly Taproom to Host 3rd Annual Mayfly Kölsch Fest

Now in its third year, Mayfly Taroom and Bottle Shop is set to host its annual Mayfly Kölsch Fest from Friday, August 25 through Saturday, August 26. The North Portland taproom will feature Kölsch style beers from a dozen local breweries in a competition where patrons will vote on their favorite beer. The weekend long event will also feature live music, food vendors, and more!

The Mayfly Kölsch Fest competition is a bit different as it will not be one that will be won by brewery name recognition as the breweries will be battling it out through a blind-tasting competition that is judged by Mayfly’s guests. With the entire event being a blind tasting, not even the breweries or distribution reps will know which beer is theirs.

Guests will have the opportunity to purchase a tasting package to take part in the festivities. Each package includes two different rounds of six 3-oz. tasters. Guests will then choose their favorite two beers from each round and receive a final tray with their top four choices to determine their favorite overall Kölsch. Once the tasting is complete, they will receive a full pour of their top Kölsch in a custom 2023 Mayfly Kölsch Fest Glass that they can keep.

At the end of the weekend, all votes will be tabulated to determine which Kölsch received the most top votes to become the 2023 Mayfly Kölsch Fest Champ.

Every tasting package includes the entire Kölsch tasting, the custom 2023 .3L Mayfly Kölsch Fest glass to be filled with the guest’s #1 Kölsch pick, and a Dos Hermanos Bakery soft pretzel with mustard. Each guest will also have the opportunity to guess which Kölsch they chose as their top beer and if correct, they’ll receive a $10 Mayfly Gift Card!

Only 200 Kölsch Fest Experience tickets will be available to the public. This year there will be two ways to purchase tickets. Pre-order Online: Purchase your ticket early and online through our website for the discounted price of $30 (100 available). The other option is Day Of Tickets with the purchase of your ticket at Mayfly the day of the event for the regular price of $35. (100 Available).

Complete Weekend Schedule:

Friday, August 25: 5pm-10pm – Kölsch Kick Off! 

  • The Festival begins! Swing by to be one of the first to taste and judge all of the awesome Kölsch!  We will have lots of brewers and brand reps onsite! Harbq will also be here cooking up three different German-inspired “Harbq Style” smoked sausages plus some sides and other surprise items. These will all be available for purchase “a la carte” directly from Harbq. (Harbq hours 4pm-sellout).

Saturday, August 26: all day 12pm-10pm

  • Kölsch Fest resumes at noon…Starting at 1pm, we will have Little Brother PDX in the plaza serving up some handmade German sausage sandwiches, their signature smash burgers, and other goodies. All Little Brother PDX food items will be available for purchase “a la carte” directly from them. (Little Brother hours 1pm-sellout).  We will have Festival Brass in the plaza from 3-6pm playing lots of fun, upbeat, interactive German polka songs to raise a glass to! Kölsch Fest voting will end at 10pm.

Sunday, August 27: Kenton Street Fair

  • No more Kölsch Fest voting on Sunday, but we will still have Kölsch flowing from the taps at Mayfly.  We will be participating in the Kenton Street Fair from 11am-6pm, so swing by our tent where we’ll be pouring samples of beer and wine as well as selling Dos Hermanos Bakery soft pretzels.

Monday, August 28:

  • The 2023 Mayfly Kölsch Fest Champ will be announced! The winning brewery will receive a trophy as well as a featured tap handle at Mayfly for the rest of 2023!
