Total Eclipse of a Beer – Complete Oregon Brewery Guide to the 2017 Solar Eclipse
|The last time a Total Solar Eclipse has crossed the entire United States of America from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast was 99 years ago. This year’s rare total solar eclipse will begin on Monday, August 21st at 10:15am PDT in Lincoln Beach along the Oregon Coast and will pass through a total of 12 states when it completes its passage across the U.S. through Charleston, South Carolina at 2:45pm EDT. The path will go through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Many breweries throughout Oregon are hosting total solar eclipse celebrations. A few are already sold out including Ecliptic Brewing’s Beer, Brunch, & Bloodys. Glad we booked early! But if you missed out Ecliptic brewed a beer for this year’s rare event with its Chromosphere Blonde Ale and is now available in 12 ounce cans.
Rogue Farms in Independence is hosting a party, Total Eclipse of the Farm, but this too is sold out but they too have a beer that celebrates this occasion with Total Blackout Ale. Then in Salem Santiam Brewing’s Path of Totality Tour is also sold out. But don’t fret as there are many more celebrations throughout the Beaver State. We will get to all of these other celebrations a bit later on here.
A few other Oregon breweries are brewing solar eclipse themed beers. Crux Fermentation Project in Bend has released Shadow Chaser Dark Lager, 5.1% ABV beer packaged in 375mL bottles. And the only place you can pick this beer up is at the brewery in Bend.
Three Creeks Brewing in Sisters will release a beer with the same name, Shadow Chaser. This unfiltered wheat beer that sits at 5.2% ABV and 21 IBUs will be available beginning August 19th on draft.
Hopworks Urban Brewery may not have a beer ready to drink during the solar eclipse but its brewers will be in the Willamette Valley picking hops as the eclipse takes place. They will then rush the freshly picked hops back to the brewery to brew Total Blackout, an Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale.
For those of you in Portland that want to catch a glimpse of the total solar eclipse it looks as if the Rose City will begin at 9:06am and reach 99.4% totality at 10:19am with it ending at 11:38am.
If you’re still looking for a place to view the total solar eclipse with a craft beer in hand there are many more craft beer events that are still open to the public. Here’s a rundown on the most comprehensive list of brewery’s hosting solar eclipse viewing events in Oregon.
