A Benefit for Haiti Relief Efforts
In pursuit of interesting and imaginative beer styles, Brewpublic and Saraveza have once again coordinated a one-of-a-kind line-up of specialty brews perfect for Valentines/Zwickelmania Weekend. This event will showcase some never before experienced draughts of chocolate and fruit beers. MY BEERY VALENTINE expresses the love and passion for dynamic brews and is designed for true beer geeks. The event is also a benefit for Mercy Corps’ Haiti Relief Efforts. Local organic chocolates from Equal Exchange as well as handmade treats will be available to pair with these mouthwatering beers.

Highlights from this event will include the following beers:
Upright Four Play: a tempting tart cherry wheat Saison aged in Pinot Noir casks.
Cascade Raspberry/Noyeau blend: a confluence of barrel-aged rarities matured in brandy liqueur casks employing hand-pitted apricot kernels.
Block-15 Love Potion No. 9: a chocolate raspberry stout conditioned with fresh roasted cocoa nibs and locally grown Oregon raspberries.
New Old Lompoc Bourbon Barrel fermented Cherry Stout: a big and bold one-off beer meshing deep, roasted chocolaty malts with sweet cherries. Barrel-fermentation provides a distinct complexity.
Vertigo Razz Wheat: an unfiltered American wheat ale eschews syrup for over twelve pounds of real raspberries per barrel — yielding a beer with a delightful blend of light, refreshing flavors.
Other specialty beers will be present from Oregon craft breweries such as Double Mountain, Fort George, Widmer Brothers, Oakshire, and more…

Portland Brewers Gose Tasting
Come try four different Gose beers brewed locally in Portland, Oregon. These include one-off seasonals never on tap at once together.
Meet Upright and Cascade Brewers and try their special German-style Goses.

Be the first to experience the Pacific Northwest’s Gose revival beers.
This special Gose tasting will include three of Cascade’s seasonal interpretations of the style. The Lipschmacker Summer Gose, the Autumn Gose and the new Winter Holiday Gose, a potpourri of citrus, tart, and salty flavor profiles. Dark ruby colored, the Winter Holiday Gose is brewed with many of the ingredient as the others but now with additional orange peel, cinnamon, hibiscus flower, coriander, nutmeg, and cranberries.
Also on tap will be Upright Brewing’s Gose. Brewer Alex Ganum states it “uses the typical coriander and salt in what we think is a balanced manner along with a blend of roughly half pilsner malt and half malted wheat. We decided to use the house French saison strain because it has a bit of tartness to it naturally but also employed a sour mash like we do on the Four and added a pinch of lactic acid to acidify the water a bit further. It ended up quite dry and hit 5.2% ABV. I think the mix of dryness, acidity and saltiness makes it easy and enjoyable to drink plenty of – our kind of beer.”

About Gose biers:
The Gose style dates back to the early 18th Century in the town of Goslar, Germany, in the Lower Saxony in the northwest slopes of the Harz Mountains. Brewed with at least 50% malted wheat in the grain bill, Gose beer fell outside of the Reinheitsgebot due to the use of salt and coriander spice. However, the beer was allowed special exception due to it being considered a regional specialty. Goses became so popular in Leipzig, a city now consisting of more than half a million people, that several regional breweries started brewing Goses themselves. By the end of the 19th Century, it was considered to be the local style of Leipzig and there were countless Gosenschänke in the city.
Gose beer is characteristically sour due to the presence of lactobacillus bacteria after the boil. Traditionally brewed Goses often fall within the 4-5% ABV range and give off a distinct lemon herbal zest and quenching saltiness initially derived from the hard water where it originated, but since then, salt is added.

pairing Northwest craft beer and chocolate.
The Cocoa Hop is a benefit for KZME Radio and will celebrate the love for local music and the marriage of Northwest craft beer with mouthwatering chocolate….music will be provided by the soulful sounds of DJ Miracle Miles.
It will take place on November 14th from 6:30 pm until 9:30PM pm at the Old Lompoc Side Bar in Portland.
Chocolate will be provided by Dagoba and Equal Exchange.
Beer will include Oakshire Espresso Stout, Lazy Boy Mistletoe Bliss, Trade Route Ginger Pale, Cascade Porter, New Old Lompoc Bourbon Barrel Fermented Dark Side Porter and Condor Pale. There will also be limited bottled specialties and more.
Tickets are $25.00 each and include beer and chocolate tastings. This is a great value and for a great cause.

Brewpublic Killer Beer Fest

On this special night during Portland’s Fresh Hop weekend, Brewpublic has curated a line-up of never tasted before beers from the Pacific Northwest. Barrel-aged brews, Belgian-style specialties, and other one of a kind and one-off brews. Most of these beers will not be available again. Bailey’s provides a great environment for tasting these beers and they will be offered in 10 oz and 20 oz imperial pints, as well as sample trays.
Confirmed beers include:
Cascade Brewing 5 Barrel Thread: a one-only blend of five amazing beers: Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad, White Port Aged Raspberry, Barrel Aged Triple, Apricot and Sour Pie Kriek. The blend may sound a bit odd, but brewers Ron Gansberg and Curtis Bain say you’ll be surprised by the “lift and color found in the final result.”
Barley Brown’s Baker City Wild Wet-Hopped American Strong Pale Ale: Employing country roadside hops from Baker City, Oregon, this beer is a kind one of kind. Brewer Shawn Kelso says “It’s pretty hoppy and at 7.25% ABV you may want to just call it an I.P.A. It was brewed with fresh hand picked unknown hops that grow wild on the side of a road here in Baker City. I put 36 pounds in a 3bbl batch. It’s pretty damn tasty!”
Caldera Rose Pedal Imperial Golden Ale: Made with 11 pounds of rose pedals and two liters of Bulgarian rose water, brewer Jim Mills says “this beers tastes like a party at Grandma’s house.” This is the only keg of this taproom exclusive beer to reach Portland and is dangerously delicious!
Vertigo Midnight Harvest Fresh-hop Ale: Hand crafted especially for this season, start-up Hillsboro brewers Mike Haines and Mike Kinion handpicked fresh Willamette and Cascade hops through the night for this gem of a brew.
Standing Stone Wet-Hop Amber Ale: Snagged from brewer Adam Benson on our last Southern Oregon trip, this piquant red ale is floral, fruity and bright with crispy, chewy notes exhibiting a fiercely drinkable presence. From one of Oregon’s most sustainably-minded brewery’s, here is a beer we are truly honored to serve at this event.
Block15 Bourbon Barrel-aged Fat Monk Dubbel: Still aging as we speak, this beer is near ready. This brew is sure to wow the palate and the mind. Aged in one Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old bourbon cask. This will only produce 3.5 kegs. Count on Bailey’s and Brewpublic to tap one of them sonofaguns!
Hopworks Oregon Oak Aged Diablito: Brewer Ben Love set us up with a special rendition of HUB’s effervescent Belgian singel ale. This bubbly quaffer is nicely spiced and according to love the bright Oregon oak adds additional peppery spice to the equation.
Seven Brides Imperial Marzenfest: Deep chestnut-brown bodied with enough belly-warming bite to last throughout the winter, this distinctly hardly sipper hails from Silverton, Oregon in the heart of harvest country. This weekend is sure to take care of the hop heads and this beer is reppin’ for the malt heads as well.
Oakshire Collaborative Evil Belgian-inspired Strong Pale: One of three kegs see make its way to the Portland. The other was tapped over the summer at Belmont Station and the other at Saraveza for Brewpublic’s 1st Year Brewniversary.
BJ’s Enfant Terrible: One of the last kegs of this brew whose began life as an unblended base beer from the brewery’s 2007 OBF entry which was racked into clean whiskey barrels and fermented with a Lambic yeast/bacteria blend. It’s well attenuated and has become quite funky over the last couple of years.
Walkabout Jabberwocky Strong Ale: Not found around Portland, the beers of Central Point, Oregon’s Walkabout are undeniably full-bodied. Brewer Ross Litton has an affinity for bold ingredient-laden brews and this is perhaps his finest example. Jabberwocky is dark and hoppy and with a smooth creeping palatability that has been known to “knock a dick in the dirt.”
Hop Valley Vanilla Porter: Rarely seen in Portland (except at joints like Bailey’s Taproom), this dessertif features fresh organic vanilla beans in the conditioning tank. Brewer Trevor Howard is no stranger to bold beer. Opened in Springfield, Oregon in 2009, here’s a great new brew to celebrate a wonderful year of Beaver State craft brews.
Beer Valley Gone Fishin’: Here’s a mild ale with a low hop level to refresh you after a hard fest o’drinkin’. Beer Valley Brewing in Ontario is Oregon’s easternmost brewery and the furthest in the state of Portland. Here’s a first time on tap in Portland brew to enjoy with mild candy notes and a crisp malt underpinning. Thanks to brewer Pete Ricks for hookin’ this one up and helpin’ reel ‘er in.
New Old Lompoc Barrel Fermented Centennial IPA: 100% fermented in a vintage white English oak barrel. Brewed with crystal malts that give it a rich golden color. Brewer Bryan Kielty says “There is a floral nose, sharp bitter finish, and a slight tough of oak.”
Roots Organic Oak-aged Island Red: From Oregon’s first all-organic certified brewery cometh this bourbon oak aged brew. Aged a well over a month in Pappy Von Winkle bourbon casks, this beer promises to be bready, full-bodied, and warming. The brewery describes it as “deep crimson creamy body with a tight elegant head.”
Double Mountain Abbey Hoffman Belgian Brown Ale: Only available at the Hood River tasting room, here is another glowing example of DM’s eclectic abilities. Spicy and mouth wateringly robust. The 7.5% ABV is well masked with rows of piquant yeastiness and delectable almond notes. Count on a great beer every time from one of Oregon’s finest craft breweries. Steal this beer!
Upright Fresh Hop of Bel-Air: Brewer and friend Alex Ganum say “This firkin of the Fresh Hop of Bel Air is filled with a saison made with fresh liberty hops from Annen brothers farm in Mt. Angel and was then dry-hopped with more liberty hops (dried) from the same farm. 6.2%” Perfect beer for maxin’ and relaxin.’
Full Sail Vesuvius: This hybridization of a Belgian golden ale holds a dryness without being phlegmatic. Fruity esters imparted by the yeast meld with a fortuitous alcoholic girth to deliver a wallop of a wake-up call to the senses. The use of Saaz and Sterian hops tweak the beer to give it an Imperial Pilsner-esque attitude that is tucked behind the imposing yeastiness.This brew is a part of Full Sail’s Brewmaster Reserve Series and only a dozen kegs of it will be released this year.
Lucky Lab Bourbon Barrel-aged Irish Red Ale: Lucky Lab brewer Ben Flerchinger delivers a one-of-a-kind keg of this sufficiently boozy, creamy, and nutty Irish-styled red ale. Here’s another beer you won’t find anywhere else around and it promised to be as delicious as any other specialty brews from LL’s beer geek repertoire.
Fort George CoHoperative Fresh Hop Ale: Fresh sticky hops brought in by the brewing community (much like Lucky Lab’s Mutt Hop Ale). This pale amber beer should provide a piny, floral presence. Says Beervana’s Jeff Alworth “I got a candy-sweet aroma with the tiniest bit of hop, slightly citrus, slightly spicy. It was what I’d call a “normal” hop aroma–nothing funky or unidentifiably herbal. On the palate, the hops come through sharply, and in a standard citrus-bitter spectrum I recognized.”
Big Horse Mac Stallion Scotch Ale: As described by the brewery: “A deep walnut colored ale with hints of smoke, dried fruit and alcohol. Low on hops, high on malts.” This beer is a rare treat for Portlanders who would normally have to trek out to the Columbia Gorge to experience a brew from this wonderful brewery. Barely big enough to meet the demand of Hood River, brewer Jason Kahler is one of Oregon’s finest in the craft. We find this nice amber-copper bodied beer with a medium white head to possess just the right balance of sweet, peaty malty, mildly nutty flavor. Well balanced and true to style. Yee haw!
Deschutes Hop Henge #6: This hophead-focused IPA is the latest in Deschutes’ lupulin lovin’ repertoire. According to Deschutes: “The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer.” Deschutes Brewmaster Larry Sidor says “When people taste Hop Henge, I want them to stop and realize – ‘Wow, this is what hops are supposed to do. I am interested in creating hop perfection, and for Hop Henge that means producing a great aroma and a juicy hop experience.” 8.75% ABV, 95 IBU.
We’ve got a few other brews up our sleeve like a Lagunita’s Saison and some that haven’t been confirmed yet it will be awesome and definitely killer!
