The Weekend in Beer – Beginning September 15, 2022

Munich’s famous Oktoberfest begins this weekend. Over the course of the new few weeks, there will be many Oktoberfest celebrations here in the Pacific Northwest. (image of Oktoberfest courtesy of Paulaner)

For this post-Labor day weekend we dug up over 20 events to share with you starting today, Thursday September 15th with Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel featuring over 40 beers from Oregon and around the world.  Today, Fire on the Mountain does a Lager Tap takeover thru the weekend at 11:00 a.m., followed by new releases from Hopworks, VICE BEER, Hetty Alice and a collabo beer with Ecliptic and Holy Mountain at the Tulip Shop Tavern.  John Holl will be doing a podcast/beer signing of his new book the Craft Brewery Cookbook at Von Ebert Glendoveer at 5:30 p.m.

Friday starts with Roscoe’s Fresh Hop Beer Summit and two fresh hop beer releases from Hopworks before noon, followed by an Oktoberfest celebration at Belmont Station, Kittens and Beer at Loyal Legion Beaverton and another new beer release from VICE BEER – Erik Freshstrata in Vancouver.

Saturday kicks off with McMenamins inaugural Fresh Hopped beer fest in Wilsonville, Terminal Gravity’s 25th Jubilee in Enterprise, Oktoberfest celebrations at both Loyal Legion locations in PDX Metro and at Imperial on SE Division in PDX, followed by a Luau at Laurelwood, a rockin’ block party at Ruse Brewing and Brewing Bridges Collabo beer fest at Pearson Air Museum in Vancouver.

Over the course of the next four days you can catch the Shins, Pavement, Interpol and Spoon outdoors while enjoying a locally made craft beer at two venues in the Portland metro area.  Fact: members of at least 3 of these bands have called Portland home over the last 25 years.

MT. ANGEL OKTOBERFEST

Oktoberfest is celebrated throughout the downtown area of Mount Angel which lies approximately 40 miles south of Portland from Thursday at 11:00 a.m. thru Sunday.  It is the largest Oktoberfest celebration west of the Cascades and features more than 40 beers from breweries around the world.

F.O.T.M. BREWING LAGER TAP TAKEOVER

On Thursday Fire on the Mountain celebrates Oktoberfest with the release of their new Vienna Lager, the Pacific North Festbier.   They will  have four F.O.T.M.  lagers  and four total other lager beers from Foreland, Living Haus, Oakshire and Rosenstadt with a soft pretzel special with Queso and a pint for an undisclosed amount of dough.

Gavin Lord helped launch Living Háus Beer with Mat Sandoval and Conrad Andrus earlier this year in the old Commons Brewery space on SE Belmont and will release beers under his new brewery project, Hetty Alice Brewing Company. He will have 3 beers on draft and 2 in cans for his release at Belmont Station on Thursday from 5-8:00 p.m.   See below for beery details:

West Coast IPA – Cans and Draft
Hetty Alice IPA pours a flaxen blonde with a dense crown of white foam. Aromas of mandarin and white grape lead to robust notes of blueberry, mango and guava. The finish is light, playful and crisp. 6.7% ABV

Bavarian Style Pilsner – Cans and Draft
Hetty Alice Pilsner pours a brilliant straw-gold with generous snow white foam. Aromas of wildflowers and citrus give way to notes of fresh bread, cracked pepper and tangerine. The finish is refreshing, vibrant and clean. 4.7% ABV

Super Fresh West Coast IPA – Draft ONLY
Take their West Coast IPA and add a plethora of Amarillo fresh hops which  impart a distinct flowery, spicy, tropical, citrus-like flavor and aroma. 6.7% ABV

Both John Harris of Ecliptic and Colin Lenfesty of Holy Mountain will be in attendance for the release of Extra Juicy Pale Ale Thursday at 5:00 p.m.  Ecliptic/Holy Mountain Extra Juicy Pale Ale was dry-hopped for extra juicy amounts of juiciness using Vista and BRU-1 hops; you can expect tropical notes, along with stone fruit, melon & pear.

Roscoe’s annual Fresh Hop Beer Summit will run from September 16th through October 9th and will have between 10 and 16 fresh hop beers, cask beers, and ciders rotating through at any given time. Taster trays are available if you would like to sample with smaller pours. In 2021, Roscoe’s tapped 123 unique fresh hop beers and they currently have 9 fresh hop beers on tap.
