With the 500-year anniversary of Reinheitsgebot, better known as the German Beer Purity Law, approaching on Saturday, April 23rd, there will be a plentiful amount of celebrations honoring this special day in German beer history. One place here in Portland that will be celebrating Reinheitsgebot is Prost! Portland. From Noon until 10:00pm on Saturday Prost! will honor Bavarian beer being brewed with only water, barley, hops and the later amended addition of yeast to the law.
It was back on April 23, 1516 that the Reinheitsgebot (rine-heights-ga-boat) was established in Southern Germany. “The Reinheitsgebot is one of the world’s oldest known food and drink regulations and it’s incredible that we’re able to celebrate its 500 year anniversary,” says Dan Hart, owner of Prost! and Stammtisch, in a news release. “To this day, it remains somewhat polarizing. Some brewers feel it stifles creativity, while others believe it was paramount to the success of German beer internationally,” states Hart who exclusively serves German beers at both his pubs in Portland, and his new location in Boise, ID. Over the course of the past 500 years many Bavarian brewers went away from brewing with only these 4 ingredients. If these brewers do brew in accordance to the Reinheitsgebot, its packaging will state this.
The Reinheitsgebot 500 Year Anniversary Party will extend beyond Prost! and will include the neighboring Mississippi Marketplace food cart pod. Hart has secured special German beers released specifically for the 500th year Reinheitsgebot anniversary. These beers include Weihenstephaner 1516, Radeberger Zwickl and Andechs Bergbock. The tapping of the ceremonial keg will take place at 2:00pm.
For food Chef Graham Chaney of Stammtisch will roast a 125lb whole pig on the spit and will be served with traditional side dishes. There will be enough pork for approximately 75 people, so don’t delay.
Entry into the Reinheitsgebot 500 Year Anniversary Party is free and all ages will be permitted until 10:00pm. Happy Hans’ German Band will be playing all afternoon. Come dressed in your lederhosen and dirndls to have a fun Saturday drinking historic German beers.
