Beer Bloggers Conference 2011 – Weekend in Review

By Dan Culver

Day 2 ( With a bit of a recap of Day 1)

Here we are in full swing at the 2011 BBC as I take up where we left off with the evening of Day 1.  Being new to the blogging scene, personally this conference couldn’t have come at a better time.  I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed at first but once it got going and I realized how familiar I was with the topics at hand I started to feel at home.  It was also a little bit of a challenge to get to the conference Saturday morning after a bit of a late night starting with our dinner and tour of at the Goschi Hops Farm near Mt. Angel, OR. Read More…

Julia Herz of the Brewers Association addresses the audience at the 2011 Beer Bloggers ConferenceHere we are at the Beer Bloggers Conference. Just heard Julia Herz from the Brewers Association speak to the crowd about the growth of craft beer as well as some shared goals for the future. Now as I sit here, local beer icons Fred Eckhardt and John Foyston take front and center as the conference’s keynote speakers.

Foyston is interviewing Fred about the early days when he discovered homebrewing and write his first book about it back in 1969, ten years before its re-legalization.

Fred calls the current revolution as the third great beer revolution. These sited revolutions include: Read More…

Burnside Grätzer: A Taste of Poland in Portland

Burnside Grätzer (photo by Portland Beer and Music's Jim Bonomo)

Central Europe meets Portland’s Central Eastside in the revamping of Grätzer by Burnside Brewing.

When getting down to tasting the plethora (John Foyston is gonna grill me for using this word) of beer at this year’s Oregon Brewers Festival, several dynamic offering struck our fancy. One in particular beer was the Burnside Grätzer, a smoky wheaten brew with a whirlwind of complex flavors melding from start to finish. Unquestionably one of the most unique styles of beer at the festival, this Grätzer returns with a an approachable levity of just over 5% ABV and a modest 9 IBUs. Named for the village of Grodzisk in Poland, the beer has seen a mini-resurgence around Portland when earlier in the year both Burnside and Breakside revisited tradition with renditions of the Grätzer. In a recent blogpost, Beervana’s Jeff Alworth highlights an interesting history of this Central European treat:

Grätzer is actually indigenous to Poland, where it was known as Read More…

The Man Behind The Bier Stein

Bier Stein founder Chip Hardy brewing The Missing Link IPA at Oakshire

By Aaron Brussat

Chip Hardy, owner of The Bier Stein Bottleshop & Pub of Eugene, is putting his brewing boots back on. It started with last year’s “High Five,” a deceptively strong imperial red ale that Hardy brewed at Ninkasi to commemorate the Stein’s fifth anniversary, and which took first in a blind imperial red taste-off. His first collaboration of this year, “Missing Link” IPA, was brewed at Oakshire and took first place in a flight of local IPAs.

Due out soon is another strong, hoppy offering: a revisiting of a Glen Hay Falconer tribute beer that Hardy and Todd Friedman, now a brewer at Hop Valley, brewed when they worked together at West Brothers. The new beer, the 6th Element Imperial IPA, should be available at The Bier Stein and Hop Valley in early July. Future plans include a beer with Read More…

American Craft Beer Week

With the proliferation of craft beer across the continent, more and more regions are celebrating the ever-growing propensity our palates have for locally made artisan products. This is not just evident in the more than 1700 Craft breweries alive in the United States, but in many other facets of everyday living. Slow food and the push toward sustainable community goods exemplify a focus on the benefits of not just better ingredients, but a system that is more conducive to parochial economic prosperity. American Craft Beer Week, as denominated by the American Brewers Association (BA), limelights such inward growth that is outwardly advancing amplifying, and augmenting.

Steadily outdoing themselves, American Craft Read More…
